Stock or modified? Bed cargo light question

Post by Phils67 »

Since finding an OEM bed cargo lamp seems impossible has anyone found an alternative that's remotely close looking to OEM? All I get when I Google is interior lamp for a pickup which is the same as a YJ hard top one btw (and available with clear lens and LED as well) I really want a bed cargo light though for my early truck. Also, are the roof lines at the back wall of the cab the same through all years 63-88? I think they are but still want to confirm. Previous owner had a cargo light like an old farm light there on mine so it already has a hole for the wiring if I chose to install plus a small ding I'd like to cover up with a bed light. Suggestions?

I have an 87 and there is no sign of a place that a light would go. Might have to get creative on that.

I see this guy has the switch for one, maybe he also has the light itself?

They were not a common option.

As for the cab, I believe all big window rear areas are pretty similar. There may be some minor manufacturing differences.

The switch was the same as Ford trucks. I don't believe the bases or lenses are available new. The lens looks a bit like a 67-72 Chevy truck bed light, but I've never compared the two directly.

I'm not worried so much about the switch. I can tap it off the interior light if I want or add another switch. I'm mostly curious about the base for the exterior lamp. It isn't the prettiest truck but I'd like it to not be a puddled mess of RTV trying to make it fit and seal. Didn't know if maybe GM or Ford or whatever used a similar style with similar contours. I know some stuff was interchangeable back then. I just dont want to look like some hillbilly that hacked in an LED pod light or something from tractor supply like alot of people do around here. Rather keep it looking fairly stock if I can

Thanks Stuka but the switch I've found pretty common. The actual light though apparently is made from this fancy material called unobtainium 😔

Could always go with LED strips along the top of the cab or bed rails. They are low profile enough that you may not notice it much, but will put out a ton of light. I also used a strip maybe 12" long inside of my tacoma as a dome light. Mounted it at the top center of the rear window trim. Super cheap to buy, and easy to install, hide or even remove.
