Hey Guys, I'm looking to install a LS in my J20 Dana 60. However, the LS for a 30 spline are crazy expensive. So, I'd like to rebuild and replace the carrier. If you have the 3.73:1 gears with a LS carrier Ill take it all. No, I dont want the whole axle-too expensive to ship. I'm in Lakeland, Fl 33812
The powr-lok is the stronger of the 2 casings, personally if I had the choice between the two I'd go with that one. What are you looking to spend? There's a few on the bay but are in the 300 range.
There is a powr-lok but its 35spline. A few trac-loks in different splines. All in the high 300s and up unfortunately. Personally if I was going to spend that much money i would pony up a little more and upgrade to 35 splines or go with a Tru-Trac but that's just me. My D60 is still open but a Detroit is in its eventual future. Alot of people complain about them on the streets but from past experience as long as it's not a spool/welded it is fine, just takes a little getting used to. You cant beat the traction
I pulled both front an rear Diff' covers to inspect them. Then I noticed that the front has a Lunchbox Locker. Hmmm? So, I text my son [it was his truck for 10 years] and asked "did we install a Locker in the front--I dont remember". He said Yeah we did for Four Wheel-n. Those were good times.. This truck has been in the family for 12 years.
I'm building a video of the carrier swap for The Slab64. It wont be as detailed as a Gear Swap video but will show the tools and tricks related to axles and gears. Hopefully, it'll be posted this weekend.
PS I plan on a Finally with a Posi Burn-out. For some reason Burn-outs get more views
AAAGH! Its the wrong carrier break. Its for 456 and up gears not 410 and lower. So, the 373 is 1/4" too close to the pinion.. GRRR! I'm now hunting for another--maybe in Tampa
I have this detroit here for a 60 but its 35 spline, higher carrier numerically, and a complete basket case. You could always get a thick cut set for the front. Snag that power lock and regear
After Ciphering, to get a LS and disc breaks on my J20 it would cost me $500-$800+. So, I tracked down a 3.73 Dodge 2500 rear axle with disc brakes and will be looking at it tomorrow. If its the Real Deal, I'll bring it home. Purchase some spring pads and a matching pinion yoke and be rolling in No Time!!

Or you could buy a brand new 30 spline, 4.10down powerlock for $500. Brackets are $90 for J20 disc, uses same calipers, pads etc as the front.
I picked up a 2006 AAM 11.5" rear with a Gear Limited Slip. It's a beast!! It is 4" wider than the Dana 60 but the spring pads are in the Exact correct position. What's the Chances of that?! I've got to cut and move the shock mounts, plumb the brakes, modify the drive shaft and get 4" U
bolts/Plate.
