Apparently one problematic connection is between the distributor and the module. If you look at the SB (service bulletins) that go with the 1977 TSM on the Tom Collins site, Jeep had a kit that made the connection between the distributor and the module one solid wire. This requires removing the reluctor wheel and replacing the coil in the distributor with the new coil-harness assembly.
It also adds a dedicated ground wire from the module plug to the coil bracket, eliminating (supplementing?) the ground wire that normally goes to the inner fender steel.

Thus it's really important to keep that connection scrupulously clean. Years ago I cleaned the connector on my '77 with DeOxit and applied a thin coating of dielectric grease. This seems to have helped, since I've owned the truck for nearly two decades and the ignition still works.
