Apparently one problematic connection is between the distributor and the module. If you look at the SB (service bulletins) that go with the 1977 TSM on the Tom Collins site, Jeep had a kit that made the connection between the distributor and the module one solid wire. This requires removing the reluctor wheel and replacing the coil in the distributor with the new coil-harness assembly.

It also adds a dedicated ground wire from the module plug to the coil bracket, eliminating (supplementing?) the ground wire that normally goes to the inner fender steel.

Thus it's really important to keep that connection scrupulously clean. Years ago I cleaned the connector on my '77 with DeOxit and applied a thin coating of dielectric grease. This seems to have helped, since I've owned the truck for nearly two decades and the ignition still works.

My first Waggy was a 76 with 401. I bought it when it was 4 years old. I replaced the ignition module soon after that and never had to replace it again. What did kick my butt was after I had it a few years, it would just shut off the motor going any speed. The first time I walked a few miles for help. When I got back, it started right up. The pattern didn't change. If I sat patient enough it would restart. Finally found the 2 wires on the pickup inside had missing insulation. If it jiggled just right it would ground out.

At least the ignition module failed at home that one time.

My Prestolite mechanical advance was frozen up. My melted module worked but none of the 4 NAPA modules I bought would work. After reading here I switched to a 78 distributor and did the Stealth HEI update and it's been a great move. Especially since to replace the Pestolite distributor was $300 so I got the whole thing for a little less than replacing the Presto would have been.
