73' j2000 gas cap

Post by mjdriver »

Hi guys I was wondering if someone could give me a part # or source of the correct gas cap for a 1973 J2000. I've tried buying one listed for the truck and it doesn't fit, the one on the truck fits but doesn't seem right, could be just worn out but I would like to be sure I order the correct one.ImageImage

Yes please let me know as well. Mine is the same. I guess we could buy a locking one. It doesn’t matter which way it goes on

You should know your GVWR. The GVWR is the 5th digit in your VIN: W, X Y oz Z for 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 resp. J2000 is not specific enough. Specifically which cap did you buy? Brand, number?

Browless and proud: '82 J20 360/T18/NP208/3.73, Destination A/Ts, 7600 GVWR
Copper Polly: '75 CJ-6, 304/T15, PS, BFG KM2s, soft top

It's 5000lb GVWR standard bed. The cap I bought is a omix 17726.13. when I do a search it seems like 73 is kind of a gray area, but I've found a crown J8123141 just would like to confirm it will fit, I would also prefer Stant if I can find one.

Yeah, I thought that the GVWR was going to make a difference with the cap. Looking at the parts book, there are two numbers for a '73 J-truck cap with the Townside bed is either a 998957 or a 999933. Unfortunately both these numbers bring up a the same cap, but a different style from what you have. https://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=998957 The 999933 should be a vented cap, and the 998957 non-vented - should be different, but the RockAuto listings say they are the same. Not surprising - the online listings are rife with errors.

The Jeep PN 8123141 is for a '74, not a '73.

Sorry, could not come up with anything else. You could look for a '74-79 filler neck, and that would fit the new cap you have. It is a non-vented cap, and expects a working vapor recovery system.

Thank you, I'll give that one a try. I don't have the evap system, tank is vented through a hose coiled up behind the panel for the filler neck with a 1/8" hole at the end. I don't think it would really matter if the cap is vented or not.

Hello mjdriver
Were you able to source a proper fuel cap? I'm very interested as I have a '73 myself with a locking cap. I would like to find a standard cap.

'73 J4000, 6000#, 258, T18/D20, 33", full disc.

Not yet, the 998937 (Stant 10623) does not fit. Next I'm going to track down the type that the truck currently has it doesn't fit properly but it may just be worn out. I will report back

The GW looks the same. Ordered off Rock Auto, it's MotoRad but the STANT is 10811. Image

Hmm... that's the same part number as the cap on my '79 CJ7. I'll have to check the fit tonight.

So I checked last night. The fuel cap off of my '79 CJ7 fits perfect on my '73 J4000. Mine is a 6000# rating. Checked my invoice from years ago and it is the same part #. Stant 10811.
