X2, sounds like the easy step , to achieve this you may have to crawl under and see if the lever on the transfer case can be moved freely by hand or with a wrench to have a better leverage, TC lever can be stuck part way... on a different TC I have to crawl under and use a wrench to finish the shifting... very annoying when the ground is wet, when it happens the first time... I now always carry a piece of cardboard in all my vehicles... useful for a flat tire swap...

Test and see, then reinstall the driveshaft and see what is happening next

Got it in 4L. Can't get it in 4HLk or 4H.
Just enough to move it, park it, and figure out what to do next.

How are you trying to shift it. Various transfer cases have different procedures. Try this.

Going about 3 mph with the transmission in neutral try the shift. On the trails I find it best to wait till I am on a hill or decline. Then I stop the jeep, pop it into neutral and when the rolling start I shift the TC. This has and advantage that if you 'miss the shift' and end up in neutral on the transfer case you can try again (as long as you have hill..)

What type? Do you mean single speed or two speed? Part time or full time?

I really bout know. I have two that came from Wagoneers in the 1982-1984 years. I know they are not NP 208.
I used to name my FSJ’s after their previous owners, I realized I had too many with five named Rick.

Dang raccoons again!

Rust is a color too.

If they still have the tag on the back, they should say AM219 or AM229. Being that its 82-84, it *should* be a 229. But would not be surprised if some 82's got the 219.

NP219 was the AWD option and NP208 was the part time option for 80-82. 83 was first year for the NP229

Ahh, you are correct. For whatever reason I thought the 219 was only used for two years.
