will this work with that?

Post by DatsunTim »

I would like to put a tilt steering wheel column that came out of (what I am told) is a mid 70s J truck into my 71 Gladiator. Are these compatible or were changes made that would not allow this swap?

Thanks!

My vote would be don't do it.

Back around 2002 or so I put a mid 80's FSJ column into (what was then) my '70.
I had to get creative on the dash mount part, figure out all the wiring and remove firewall mounting plate from old column and attach it to the newer one.
But best of all I had to cut the dash.

I didn't think much about it then and it wasn't that much work (I weld, cut and fab all the time) but that dash is never going to look correct again.

I still regret this mod.

I am hoping that, since the tilt I am getting is from the mid 70s, it should be close enough that I won't have to do any surgery; something I am totally unwilling to do.

Thanks

Sorry, I should have added some additional info.
It's the same column from 73-85 as far as fitment and size.

There are aftermarket columns out there that I'm sure would work better but they are $$$.
I should probably also mention that in the 10 years it's been in there I have only changed the position on it to work on the tilt mechanism.

This is a good pic for what I've been thinking about, I want a Gladiator grille in my 88 Wag, followed sometime by an early dash, not up for spending for aftermarket column either, gives me something to think about when/if I ever get to this point.

I'm putting a Comanche tilt autoshift Column in my '84 J10 to operate the AW4 trans. The cable linkage works better than the jury rigged notch I cut in the old 727 shifter to get low gear.
