Early model dash availability?

Post by 243 »

How often do you find pre-70 metal dash assemblies?

And I would appreciate photos of any early model dash swaps into later model FSJ's.

I have 1 I am putting into my 1980. I have pics of the dash setup but not in yet. Had it in and out a couple of times to get everything setup.

Here is a couple of pics of the dash

Early model dash availability?

Seems to be a popular swap. Any thing special have to done or is it a bolt in. I think I saw somewhere the windshield has to come out?

Yes windshield out to get to all the bolts properly. Mine has a roll cage built into the cab. so we had to cut out the 1980 dash and then do basically the same to the 65 dash so it goes back in around the Roll cage. Basically bolts in. The steering column needs some work if your going to keep the newer column. The opening is smaller. Some people make it bigger but I just cut down the outside housing piece right where it meets the dash. Then it bolts in. It takes some finesse but it works. I really like the older dash, so it's worth the effort.

Mine isn't caged yet, I also like the look of the old metal dash. The less plastic and foam the better IMO

Here's a picture of Beca's dash after we finished it. Welded in all the pad holes at the top edge and moved the vent knobs to the lower section instead of next to the heater controls.Took out the speaker screen and bead rolled a panel for it.

We also added a clove box a/c unit.
More pictures are in her build post 69 J-Truck in the build section back about page five.

Awesome, and it took all of 5 seconds to make a decision and say those magic words..."I will take it".

The early dash solves many issues that were a source of anxiety:

1. Gauge pod will be centered rather than offset to the left.

2. Sanitary pad will be eliminated and just a few holes to fill.

3. Nice location for Vintage Air controls (factory location)

Um...Bob, I think I might need one of those speaker panels. Why do you keep making stuff? Every time I end up needing it. Let me know cost. Thanks!

Sorry Mr. Jim, But That's not Bob (dad) It's Beca that made that panel. I have a sheet of 14ga and a bead roller what would you like. Just don't make me ride with him over the hill again..

OK Beca. Sorry about that. It was listed under his name :)

Anyway I need basically the same thing you have in the radio speaker area. I have the Jeep emblem. I am going to part you make black so it goes with the dash. If you look at my post above with pics you will see I have the radio screen painted black but I really like the idea of a solid piece. Any you can mail it to me, saves you from riding over the hill with dad! :P

Just let me know costs and I will get you a check out. have a fun weekend!!!

Can the early 70s metal dash be swapped into a 1989 model? Any issues with compatibility?
Thanks

We put a 69 dash into my 89. Customized some stuff along with vintage air, but nothing associated with mounting the dash. They did have to modify the steering column hole to align with the 89 column alignment. pics are in the link in my signature of the work done to the jeep, including the dash.

I also preferred the metal dash.
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

HVAC probably won't fit, will have to use something else like Vintage Air.
