I recently purchased a 1972 J4000. Camper Special 8000 GVW, stock springs and axles. Runs and drives great, next on the list is a lift. Being an early truck with post mount springs, I know my options are limited for kits. I want to run 35 inch tires. My research points to either a 4 or a 6 inch lift. Any input and examples are greatly appreciated!
I can't offer any advice on the lift or springs, but I just wanted to say that you have one fine looking J-truck there. I really like the white over orange! Best of luck with the lift, I'm certain you'll get good advice form the folks here.

A 4" lift should fit your 35's. These trucks with or w/o a lift ride rough and I wouldnt want a 6" spring because of how much rougher it would ride vs the Four.
Ooh, Butterscotch Gold, very nice. Could be Omaha Orange (a fleet color) but I'm thinking it's Butterscotch Gold, a regular production color for 1972. A '72 should have a paint and trim tag on the passenger side firewall, though they are glued-on and often lost.

The 1972 two-tone paint code for Butterscotch Gold is 498. There is a two-tone paint code for Renegade Orange, 525, but I think this is not Renegade Orange - that color is a lot redder than what we see above. There is no two tone paint code for Omaha Orange, so I'd say it's not that. I'd guess that the tan foreground is washing out the Butterscotch-y brown tones in the paint somewhat.
This is Butterscotch Gold:
And Renegade Orange:
I think this shows the difference, even with the lousy color balance of internet photographs shown on a monitor.

Good eye! Yep, Butterscotch Gold and Champagne White. Has been repainted by previous owner, but the paint and trim code is still there.
Very nice find from what you have shared. That color combo is my favorite for tutone trucks. My grandparents had a 72 Hornet wagon in butterscotch when grandad retired. The family called it the great pumpkin. Anyway, a 4" spring lift is usually fine with 35" tires. 6" lift is a pretty darn stiff ride. Good Luck!
Howdy from Mesa! Great looking truck. A bunch of us get together the weekend before Thanksgiving out in Florence for a 'Thanksgiving in the Desert" (TITD) family get together. Many folks camp. It would be great if you could join us, there is usually a half a dozen to dozen FJS's and around 40 or so folks. Watch for a TITD post soon and mark your calendar for the Saturday before Thanksgiving. November 23rd this year.
Update:
Went with the Hell Creek 4” springs in the front and 2.5” block in the rear. Sits pretty level now. Got some new eight spoke Raceline wheels, just need new 35’s and Bilstein shocks. Oh, and a drop pitman arm.
