1983-84 J10 on WJ conversion

Post by CommanderKobo »

Hello, so i currently have a J10 that is pretty rough mechanically, and is missing 80% of the vacuum lines and system. It has the inline 6 which i really like as an engine, but do to missing lines and parts it doesn’t like to idle.

I also have a 99 Grand Cherokee (WJ) and i had to jump the j10 off to move it the other day and i noticed that the WJ is within an inch or two of having the same wheelbase. I haven’t checked width yet, but i was wondering about how hard would it be to either swap the bodies or swap engines. (4.7 V8 in WJ is a real hearty and suprisingly economic engine).

Welcome to the forum!

WJ's aren't body on frame. They are uni-frame where the frame is molded into the body. But even if they had a frame, they have a 106" wheelbase, and a short bed J10 is 119". The J10 axles are also significantly wider than the WJ axles.

But you could certainly do a drive train swap into the J10.

Very briefly and as far as I understand the story...
...in the waning days of AMC/Jeep Corporation, their engineers were very far along with the design of a new modern designed V8 to replace AMC 304/360 family V8 engines.
After the purchase AMC/Jeep, Chrysler inherited this new V8 engineering work.
Chrysler, like AMC, was in need of a new design to replace its aging LA series of V8 engines...
...something that had lower emissions, better fuel economy, improvement performance.
Chrysler proceeded to further the development of this new AMC initiated 4.7 V8.
So, this Dodge/Jeep 4.7 V8 would not that far outta place in a vintage Jeep.
