upgrading from 15" OEM wheels to 17" (stock axles and hubs)

Post by Laredo Matt »

I'm doing a full resto build and would like to do is move from the stock 15" wheels to 17" wheels with a 5x5 bolt pattern. I'm keeping the OEM axles and hubs so that makes it a bit more difficult (hub bore is pretty large) but 5x5 lug pattern opens up so many choices for wheels and tires.

There was some discussion here in 2016 on lug patterns and spacer rings.

First step is find the right adapter. There are a lot out there but I'm wondering if anyone has used one and recommendations. The quadtratrac site shows the hub diameter is pretty large on the wagons compared to modern / all other jeeps so not sure how much of a challenge that is going to present.

I'm hoping someone has gone through this exercise already and can point me in the right direction. I haven't landed on style yet which is why I'm looking to get a combo in place that allows me maximum freedom.

Dana 44 up front and Dana 20 out back.

thanks for any pointers/feedback!

I cannot think of any alloy 5x5 wheels that will clear the center bore on our axles. There might be some steel wheels, but those already come in our lug pattern.

There is at least one guy here with a modern looking alloy wheel that is 6x5.5: https://www.fsjnetwork.com/forum/viewto ... 12&t=17906

Its still a work in progress:

Thanks Stuka.

I figured it would be a challenge so appreciate the link. At the bottom of the first page of the post link you sent me he has some specifics on tire/wheels. Look, size and color is consistent with what I'm thinking so am gonna check out that manufacturer and what other options they have as well.

Ive been running H2 17" wheels on my J20. Its tight on the front hubs but fits. However, when I installed the AAM 11.5" rear axle I had to open up the center of the wheel 1/16" for the H2 wheels to fit.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is H2 a wheel manufacturer or are you talking about wheels off the Hummer H2? When I type in H2 17" wheels all results are for Hummer wheels ?

Yes, those are 8 lug wheels off a Hummer H2, which are of no use to you, as you have 6 lug axles.
