NV3550 to NP208

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

Getting ready to swap the 258 in my '82 over to a 4.0 from a 2003ish Wrangler. The 4.0 comes with an NV3550 which I'd like to hook up to the stock NP208. Original trans was the T176.

I've heard some folks say it will bolt right up, some folks say a clocking ring or spacer is needed. What say you guys? Who has done this swap?

I did the ax15.
Like the ax15, the 3550 uses a transfer case with a short input. Used in a wrangler, the adapter is drilled for a flatter clocking than what is used in an xj or sj. When I installed the ax in mine I used a short input np231 and redrilled the transmission for the lower clocking. If you are set on using the 208 you will need a clocking ring to drop the front output and take up the extra length of the transfer case input. Novak is a good resource for info and parts.
