I think the cab is a j series truck cab that’s been chopped, or a bastardized waggie. Nonetheless, It would take a lot of fabrication to make the cab evolve into an M715.

After looking closely at the pictures I think the cab is a M715 with Waggy doors and hood. It has the windshield frame mounting brackets and the back of the cab looks like a 715 or someone did a ton of work on the windshield mounting stuff. I'm going to be out in Cheney next week for work if anyone wants me to take a look at it.

It appears to have been a winch truck from the data plates. Wonder if the winch stuff is in the bed? If it really does have the NP205 and not the NP200 it would be a bonus. The yellow color is also what MT Forestry painted their M715s. They did some nice conversions on them when they got them for their Forestry service.

Thank you for the link 66stepside.
Thanks for the offer shortbus, but I don't think I can swing it yet. I'm in San Diego, but have family in Ohio (that wouldn't be too keen on it in their yard or garage waiting for me to find time to get out there and work on it).

Maybe I should look at moving up that way one day. Seems to always be some great FSJs popping up across the northwest corner of the country.

It could make it to N CA too. My mom still lives there in Humboldt County and I'll be down sometime this summer to visit. I'll also be down in N NV near Golconda sometime mid to late May too. You know you want it.🤩😍

I’m prepping the 401 to fire. The old plugs are out, new ones are in, and Mystery Oil down each of the cylinders.

Image

I have it mounted on a rolling frame. There’s still quite a bit to do, but ya gotta start somewhere. Next up in no particular order: fluids changed, PS box hooked up (to save the PS pump from damage), radiator installed, starter, battery and cables, extra grounds, and basic ignition.

Wow, rusty collars and pretty sooty looking. How much MMO do you usually put in each cylinder before turning it over? That will be great to hear the 401 growling again!

About 1/2 the bottle over several days to be honest.

I drill a little hole in the lid and squirt away.

I used the 60s era auto BOP tranny adapter ring to get the starter on, now I’m on to the intake- checking wires, carb, vacuum lines, then it’s on to the oil. Afterwards, the radiator.

Yeah, the M715 in Cheney has an M cab. It just happens to be a similar color to the Waggie doors. Nice urban camo? Lol.

Edit:

The 401 turns over.

Haha, true!

I’ve been trying to post pics for the past few days, but keep getting error messages. Image

I’ve starting the process of whittling down the unnecessary stuff- for starters, the smog pump and various related pieces are off, now it’s time for new wires, mufflers to keep the neighbors reasonably happy during quarantine, and then we’ll see where it goes from there.

Image

I plugged the air tube holes with 9/16 thick fine thread bolts, then cut then off reasonably flush with the manifolds. I’m debating on whether or not to tact weld them into place to keep them from backing out.

1960 FC170 and a 68 M715?

Post by 66stepside »

My CRC (Cab Removal Cage) is 1/2 way done, so I’m tackling a few things on the M715 this weekend- leveling the cab/front clip, elimination of the rats nest of m715 wiring, and setting up the Chevy hydro boost brake assembly (including installation).

If all goes according to plan, I’ll be able to rewire the M715 ignition and fire her up just to get her outta my way to pull the FC out... and place her under the CRC to access the engine bay for the 401 swap. It would be nice to have the M7 start, run and stop!

Edit:

This is slow going. The hydro boost was a PITA that took most of the AM to instal, but it is still not connected to the brake pedal.

The wiring harness in the engine bay is ready and fits nicely on the cut out I made from the Chevy firewall (it attached perfectly to cover the M series factory firewall hole). The caddy tilt telescoping steering wheel isn’t going to work, so I reconfigured the K30 column in the hopes that it would fit a little better without a crazy amount of mods.

1960 FC170 and a 68 M715?

My radiator came today.

Image

The space in the M715 is 28” wide. The radiator was supposed to be 28” wide, too. The radiator is 28 1/4” wide. Image

So it’s cutting time.

Edit:

That wasn’t so bad, but it was messy.

Next up brackets to mount it and the fan shroud. And, of course, minor trimming.

Edit:

Radiator is in, plumbed and filled. But the steering column had to be redone- the key wouldn’t turn due to clearance issues, what a PITA to dial that in. I do have the firewall sleeve ready to weld up, though. She’s close to getting ready to fire up.

Nice progress! I've been away from the board and my own Jeep for a little too long. Catching up on the threads here. Maybe an odd question here but given the ultimate stiffness of the 715 springs, are you keeping those springs? On my truck, I might try some cushy seats to add just a bit of comfort. Not sure yet. Are you sticking with military seats or something else?

Nice and shiny, bummer that there was a 1/4 inch difference...glad you were able to get it to fit with some "trimming."

Satin, black, that should look nice...but something else caught my eye...a Willys Truck too? Wow, you have all the great toys, FC, M715, and that Willys truck too (would love to see more picture s of that too, but don't want to derail thread). Your part of the PNW is like magic, seems to have all kinds of cool old Jeeps.

Thanks! I sold off the M frame, axles and drivetrain so I could set the bed, cab and front clip onto a Chevy K30 frame (single wheel version, not a dually). I drove the K30 around before the swap and mods, it was a rough rider, too. It has a serious lift. I do have the military seats in it now. They will stay- for now. It’s always different when you get them running as it takes a bit to shake them down and dial them in. I don’t keep spare seats anymore as they take up too much room, so if it needs newer seats, I might be in trouble.

We’re on the Olympic Peninsula for a week. I’m going full bore on her when we get back.

I’m not sure why Satin Black ended up an option, but it was raining like crazy that day and I could fabricate the body mounts like I wanted, so I started cleaning and sanding... and then paining. I dig it, too. It does mean a load of body work on her, though, because black paint shows all the body imperfections.

Yeah, I’ve whittled the herd down to just the trucks. Not sure why it’s only trucks, maybe a character flaw? ImageImageImage

The 54 Willy’s did get a new water pump and I’m waiting in the new rebuilt radiator, but aside from a narrowed 44 front, and a 5 lug Dana 60 rear (both have limited slips and 4.10/4.09 gears), she’s bone stock. I really enjoy driving it.

This is the place where jeep has always been part of the landscape as the weather kinda necessitates a 4wd - especially in the surrounding communities.

Image

I do have a “build” page on The Old Willy’s Forum” here: https://www.oldwillysforum.com/forum/in ... -wa.14099/ because it is not an FSJ and I want to follow the rules on this forum.

Thanks for the link, that is a fine-looking 54; I'll head over and take a look at that thread. Love that the front bright work is still shiny and clean, too many get painted over. (keep hoping to find decent price/condition one or wagon to keep at my family in Ohio's so I can have a car when we visit)

And to keep on topic- that paint was a lucky byproduct of not getting what you wanted fab'ed up; even if the body needs some loving to help the black satin along.

Enjoy the Oly peninsula!
