‘83 Brougham Build

Post by MReese Wagoneer »

So I been meaning to do this for a while
Last March I bought this with a seized 360 , thought how bad can it be, pull it rebuild it be driving it this summer right !!

Off to the machine shop

Then daughters graduation , June vacation Bla Bla

Then an other option came up
Image
After some shipping issues and suck before I knew it it is September but I have it ! The 401
Then after some questionable things I decide to rip it apart and it didn’t look trust worthy
ImageImage

Finally in December it all came back
ImageImageImage
I used some free labor of my son home to help :)
Well finally
ImageImage
It is ready to drop back in !
I have a few fun parts too
ImageImage

So I wait now for decent weather ! Maybe this weekend I can drop it in

Nice! Looking forward to the progress. Your Waggy is a twin to my 81. Same color, same 'tasteful' wood strip.

Which oil pan did you use? When I swapped in a 401 I used the pan that came with it. It ended up hitting the exhaust cross over. You probably won't have that problem since you are going with headers and a custom exhaust.

Yep as soon as I mocked the headers on the 401 pan said "NOPE" i have the 360 pan on it. which is how I ultimately found that I needed to tear deeper in, so it was a saving grace :banghead: but glad its money well spent

current issue is the accessory hole for the alternator on the 401 is 7/16 the 360 was 3/8 :banghead: ......... waiting on a mid 70's alt
i removed the bushing in the crank for the 727 torque converter
i have the BJs 401 conversion flywheel

You'll find the exhaust bolts are different too.

You can just drill out the alternator hole on the alternator, that's what I did.

Originally I didn't realize the alternator holes were different and the smaller bolt 'worked' at first but it ended up hollowing out the hole.

I have the same ones. I opted out of the Y pipe because I want to do true duals,. Looking at your picture, and at the angles of the collectors after my install; it might make sense to purchase that Y pipe and cut it off at the single collector to achieve my goals. Just add 2 new collectors and head straight back. Sorry, thinking out loud. Appreciate the pics and information. Your truck looks like it's going to Bro-ham-tastic, love the interior.

Thanks , I opted for the 3” all the way out also
I’ll see how the Y pipe works here pretty soon

Get some 'Stage 8' locking header bolts. A bit of a pain to install but it will eliminate the bolt backing out.

I agree with the Stage 8
what I am wondering how hard will it be to drop it in with headers installed !!!!! hmmmmmmmm

alt from BJs as anticipated did NOT have the correct mount hole diameter
You can just drill out the alternator hole on the alternator, that's what I did. Still an option

Nice looking Brougham! :-bd Having done a 401 swap in a 80s rig myself, I just want to say one of the most over looked steps is getting a 401 flex plate for the 727. Hopefully you already have that covered.

re: Slipping it in with the headers on... I wouldn't. My 360 was a tight fit with the front clip off, and nothing bolted to the firewall.

My 2 cents.

Well something didn’t set right with torque converter , it doesn’t turn independent of the engine can’t line up tc and flex plate
Guess it comes back out
Doesn’t look like it’s up against flex plate I wonder if it’s the hub

2 questions. The fit of the converter hub was checked with the crankshaft end prior to assembly, yes?
#2. the spacer plate is installed between the block and the trans?

These may seem obvious, but it almost sounds as if it's too "tight."

I removed the bushing and did a quick check with out the flex plate
Yep the spacer is in
So even though I’m sure the TC stepped in twice I didn’t do actual measurements knowing I needed to
Or the hub doesn’t seat far enough
