79 golden eagle, project name: moose

Post by dissinnick »

Okay guys, meet my new project. Golden eagle chief. Nickname is moose.

K, story time:

About a year ago I bought this out of a field, no engine or tranny. Drive lines in the back seat. I had it towed to a buddies. I then got a wild hair, rented a uhaul, drove 2 hours and picked up a 79 waggy. Drag it to my buddies. Pulled engine tranny, t case. Slapped them in. (We had 48 hours from start to my flight out) serious roadkill stuff.

We ended up discouraged and stopped when we found the headman headers sticker on the inner fender and realized our stock manifolds weren’t gonna come near the modified exhaust. Sooooo... we towed to a yard and put a cover on it.

K,

So she arrived yesterday. She is amazing, only one small rust spot. I am thinking about clear coating it. Thoughts?

First things first, get er running....

- Clean it out, start fresh
- install the Transfer case
- drive lines
- try and get it running.

(i did order headman headers and put them in, they came up about 1" short and collectors were a little different, so ill cut the old ones and weld in the new ones)

Next:
- Take it for a little spin
- Manual tailgate window install, I dont like dkking with the rear electric one, i find them sluggish.
- decide on LS swap or not. (i am leaning towards yes.)

K, got the 360 to fire.

Pumped gas from gas can to the holly 2 barrel on it. I’ve got a edelbrock performance 4 barrel intake. If i keep the 360 I’ll put an efi Tb on it. Just finished a fitech on one of my other cars, super satisfied.

Applied Penetrating oil to all seat bolts and foot panels.

Back seat is pulled out.

Got the rear window down, thankfully the switch made the motor move 1” increments. So press down, run around back push down, press down, run push down... took 30x but it’s down.

Unfortunately rain came today so I’ll be waiting to install the manual regulator and crown handle. I’ve never gotten the electric rear windows to move as quickly as Id like.

Looking at LS options now:

-is 5.3 worth it or should I go bigger?
-is 4l60 sufficient or is 80 better?
-is there a modern AWD xcase or is the np241c the way to go?

Anyone know another good source outside of Tilden motor sports?

Okay,

Tonight I ripped out old tailgate regulator. Cleaned up and undercoated inside. Replaced electric with manual regulator. Moves well but pin studs are pretty well worn.

Also all I could get was a crown crank, definitely not as good as the oem.

I used an old trick to get the E clips or whatever they are called onto the studs.

Socket proper height not too big of an opening.
Plank of wood, flat crow bar as lever.

Place clip and socket between window bar and top of tailgate. Wedges in nicely.
Then plank on bottom of tailgate, then lever up and press down on top of tailgate.

Has anyone used these crown regulators?

Ripped out Interior, side panels are good except the door cards they are worn out Levi editions. Definitely a transfer in. I’m thinking more and more this was an old IFSJA rig.

Has skyjacker 4”
Has a spare tank in the spare tire area.
I can’t tell if the seats were stock.

All seat bolts and seatbelt bolts came out no problem. PB soak and some elbow grease.

I’m looking for a manual crank handle for the tailgate if anyone has one?

There is some foot well rust.
I’ll attach more pictures this weekend.

I bought the crown handle for my 78, but I may upgrade to a power unit. Still undecided on it, as I currently have mine completely pulled apart for media blasting.

Nice!

I’m looking for a stock manual tailgate crank if anyone has one.

Levi door cards were in rough shape so I pilfered the chrome bars and buttons off them, then trashed them.

Okay,

I have some time to work on it, the whole thing would be a lot easier if i could pull the body off.

Easiest ways?

a. lift the body above the engine?
b. remove front core support, clear tires and roll forward?
c. pull front clip and then lift body?

timely responses appreciated.

Never done it myself, but Jkcondrey just posted in his build thread looks like he lifted body up and then rolled chassis with engine/trans out from under it here viewtopic.php?p=186078#p185795 last couple of posts have the pictures

Steps to get this far:

Removed hood, used straps and temp gantry since I’m solo.

Front clip: Unbolted fenders at door jam, inner fender mounts, front body mounts, wiring and AC hoses. Same gantry, then pulled body out from under, lowered onto cart.

Man, you didn't waste any time. Looks like you made that improvised gantry work well too. Nice!

Okay, body off and frame out.

I do not suggest anyone doing this by themselves or with little more than a bottle jack.

I suggest a rotisserie, level ground, a lift or a gantry.

I was dumb and should’ve flipped the Goldie 180 before pulling the frame. So if anyone has a brilliant idea for spinning a body 180, lemme know.

Anyways. Frame is out, now to pull engine, exhaust and fuel system.

Clean and por15 frame. Image

Oh if lifted with 33s+ I highly recommend changing to rims or smaller wheels. Body won’t have to be so damn high
