Yes sir! If only for the turning radius! I honestly don't know the u-joint size but I think the open knuckle uses a larger one. I guess option 4 doesn't leave much room for making use of whatever original 60s stuff is left on that Wag, but number 3 would still allow for keeping period correct stuff. I don't know if 44s were an optional front axle on 68 Wags. Most (or all) used Dana 27s, right?

Yeah, the early wags used the smaller axle for sure. I think most would say don’t waste the time and energy to do an axle swap on an early wag, but my son does want a challenge build. I might turn him lose on this one? The green 65 I had, had Widetrack axles under it and that one was pretty damn sexy.

Edit:

Maybe they were newer NT axles!?

I’m not sure if I mentioned this when it first happened, but the crappy dodge 44 seized up at the ring & pinion and only worked in 2wd (a while back ago). Recently it started leaking fluid out of both tubes at a pretty quick clip, so it was time to do something.

Knowing what a PITA it is to swap in different axles and not wanting to rebuilt a marginal axle, we tackled relocating the springs in front for 76 J10 axles.

Luckily I had all the parts necessary to bring the 62 14 years into the future with a stash of spare parts- including a Rusty’s 3” lift with springs in the front and blocks in the rear.

“New” axles mean new rims, means new tires, so I gave him the 6 lug 33’s off my quad cab build. The pics are dark because we just wrapped up the front axle install at 10pm.

It has been roughly 22 years, or so since I’ve had to relocate springs, but this time it went better than before because my son was there to do quite a bit of the heavy lifting.

We didn’t want to relocate the springs, but the turning radius was bad juju if we didn’t.

Perfect stance now, and the wheels with the dog dishes really set it off.

Just when you think a project is all set, this shows they are never done! Looks excellent rolling down the street. If I ever replace the closed knuckle front on mine, it's threads like this that reinforce how it's better to bring over the springs with a different axle whenever possible.
73 J4000. 360, MC 2100, T18A, D20, stock closed knuckle Dana 44 front, 60-2 rear. Warn Lock-O-Matics, Warn/Belleview electric winch, true duals with glasspacks, old-school front diff skid plate, used 265 Toyos on 16" AR wheels.

Thank you, we appreciate that.

I drove it last night to get new brakes for the rear axle. What a difference in the ride. It rides better than my 66!

Awesome to hear that it rides so well, even more awesome to get to spend time with your son getting it there. Looks great on the road picture.

Kaiserjeeps over on IFSJA made me two sets of door sill plates: one set for my son’s truck, and one for my super wagoneer.

Here’s my son’s set:

I’ll post up pics when they get installed... we bought them as a birthday gift for him.

Yeah, if you’ve never seen how work, you are missing out. He work is among the best there is for rebuilding jeeps. He does the work himself and not with a fab shop crew- crazy amazing stuff.

He sells his reproduction parts- door sills, firewall insulation, etc. Impressive.

He does ship, too!

Kaiserjeeps does high end quality work at affordable prices. His attention to detail is impressive, to say the least.

Dang.

It’s held up all this time with three part time jobs and school. New radiator time.

We did a cylinder head leak test to make sure the head gasket did not sustain damage:

We did the test twice: first my son did it, then I did a test a day later. Both tests came back clean and clear- no cylinder head leaks!

My son and his buddy put bedliner on the bed of his truck and coated the rest in clear after a round, or two of wet sanding:
