SOA front. Now what for the back.

Post by nblehm »

Just bought a 82 J10. It is sitting on j20 axles front is SOA and rear is sitting on 4-5" blocks. I am concerned with axle wrap. What are some options for the back. Shackle flip, lift springs, combo of both? The truck did come with a brand new set of alcan springs, the dude I bought it from said it should give it more lift, which I dont want. I may try them anyway I see where I end up. Just looking for the best solution to match the front. Want to wheel this but I am concerned about spitting u joints from axle wrap

Generally with a SOA on the front a shackle flip in the rear is the way to go. It comes out pretty even.

Another option is to simply install a rear traction bar and keep your existing setup. A lot of folks like the extra droop that the stock rear setup affords.

If you are 'wheeling it hard and you install new springs (eliminating the blocks) you pretty much need a traction bar anyway. I'm considering ways to fab one up for my front as well.

Mine is homemade (you can see it on the passenger side of the differential), but here is a kit: http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/AWKIT.html

When I switched to a 14bolt rear, the chevy spring perches almost perfectly line up with the rear frame rails so I just did some drop brackets from the frame and a 2" lift spring. Keep in mind that mine already had 4" lift springs in the front BEFORE the SOA front. I have SOME axle wrap but it is not bad at all. Eventually, I will do a traction bar but much differently than Blake did!

Traction bar also a good idea. I need to learn more about wheeling with leaf springs. Always had 4 links and coils etc.

The rear leaf springs ride like garbage so I need to replace them anyway I think. May throw the alcans on and see how it sits before I decide to do a shackle flip. When the axle droops do the rear shackles bottom out on the frame in the stock configuration? Also need to get some new shocks.

Blake I believe I sold you a 360 engine a few years ago. (probably more like 3-5 years ago)

I think it was an AMC 401 with TBI that you sold me. I threw that in a waggy on 37's, rode the snot out of it then sold it to a buddy.
