Anybody here running General Grabber Extreme Traction tires? If so, how do you rate them?

tire opinion

Post by Stuka »

I don't have these personally , but have run trails with a guy that has them on his 4dr JK in 37" varieties on 17" wheel. So take it as you will. Kind of a mix of what I witnessed, and what said.

According to him, they suck in the rain and snow, probably due to no sipes. They did pretty decent on the rocks, no clue how they are in mud. I know they are popular in desert racing.

I am actually tire shopping now for my JK and what turned me off of these besides the rain/snow traction is the price. From looking around, they cost more than just about every other tire, even MT/R's which are quite expensive.

Thanks Brandon. The tires I am looking for don't need to perform well on ice and snow, more offroad. In looking around, I see about $25 savings on the Grabber compared to Goodyear MTR and BFG MT KM2 in 35x12.5R15.

Oh right, you would get them in a 15" wheel. I run 16" wheels on my JK (15's require grinding the brake calipers), and their 16" tire sizes are WAY more expensive.

I don't, and haven't, own(ed) a set of those, but I have heard they're one of the heavier tires made.

I do plan on getting a set of the Goodyear Duratracs for the Wrangler around the end of June.

I am also pretty sure that I am going with Duratracs. Awesome in the snow (one of the best tires I have ever seen actually) and do well on the trail.

They look good. But yeah, bit of trimming and/or lift may be required :)

I drove Wally to a Dr appt and then to work on Wednesday. The ride is not bad on the windy roads up in the park. About 15 miles in, the LF tire threw a 3oz lead weight. I looked at all the wheels and they balanced the new tires with old weights. Off to Wally World in the morning. :-q

Go buy you a large bottle of Air Soft pellets @ Wallyworld, and put about 1000 pellets into each tire. You will never have to worry about re-balancing them. :ar!

Why's that?
Won't they just roll around in there? Or do they even out and find the 'low' spots when up to speed?

They do balance the tire for the most part. Typically I have only seen people with large (38"+) bias ply tires run them as you cannot otherwise balance them. With a smaller tires, if you put in too much, you can actually put it out of balance as you will end up with too much weight in the area that they gather in. I would stick with standard spin balancing if at all possible.

At speed, they spread around the inside of the tread. Yes, too much will have a negative effect. I have been using antifreeze for years, the airsoft thing is kinda new for me. I have my own manual tire machine and find it hard to pay someone for something I can do myself at home. ;)

Hey bud, glad you made it over. Image

I start with about a cup and 1/2 for a 31" tire, more for bigger. If you dont get enough the first time, just break the bead, add more and reset.

My opinion about tires that they should be round, hold some sort of gas under pressure and made from material that is flexible.

...in the case of Flint, tires should be under the vehicle, in a wheel well and not in the ditch. <snicker snort>
