Stock Wheel Size & Backspacing on Wide Tracks?

Post by killerinstinct »

Hey Guys,

I have an 86 Grand Wagoneer and the previous owner did the sidetrack conversion with the fender flares and axles and 2" lift.
Image

They went with Dana 44 on the front and AMC 20 on the rear both wide tracks.

I want to go with that 4 door FSJ Cherokee Chief look and get similar wheels, but wondering what size wheel and tires they were. I've seen some with 32's and others with 33's and some say 15x8 wheels other say 15x10.

I currently have 16x9 eagle alloys, does anyone have one that can confirm the wheel and tires spec so I can order some 8 spokes?

Here's a pic of the wheels I want: Image

Thanks in advance.

Hey, cool Jeep. Nice to have another WT conversion on the site. Pretty positive it does not have a lift however. It may have some lift blocks in back, but definitely not the front.

No FSJ ever came from the factory with a 15x10 wheel. WT's and some J-Trucks were available with 15x8's. There was a few styles available depending on the year. The ones you show above are the more common style. You can still buy d-hole wagon wheels new if you look around. But the center caps will be the tough part to find, and after market wheels won't have the holes to mount them.

For the majority of the WT's run the tires were bias ply, so the sizes won't match up to whats available today. But they are close to what a 31x10.50 is. If you want to run a tire that is any larger than this, say a 33x12.50, you will want to put a lift on. A 4" lift clears them fine and gives a great look. If you want to go with 31's, I would still find a way to level it out.

Very cool Wag! If you go with a 3" lift you can clear 33s on widetrack. I run 15x8 rims with 33 12.50s. Summit sells nice vintage looking wagon wheels in white and black for a good price.

Im in the process of (slowly) building a WT waggy now, so I’m not much help. Will subscribe to this thread because I will have to get new wheels and tires once I do the axle swap.

Would also love to see how the rear door/flare was done...will send you a PM

Hey Stuka,

You are absolutely correct. Looks like they used some blocks in the rear. All this time I thought it was a 2" lift. Oh well I should still be able to fit wider wheels on 31" tires though. Maybe the ones on that cherokee have a different backspacing they look like 31 12.5 r15's

I'm currently running 16x8's wheels on 245/75 R16 tires

Thanks for the info:

Hey Mreuther12, if you are on Facebook, there is build thread with photos here:
https://www.facebook.com/search/posts/? ... =SERP_TAB

Something to note, on mine the flares were cut and part are welded to the door and the rest on the rear wheel well. See pic below:
Image

On some others like the one below, the flare is completely welded on the rear panel/wheel well and the door opens freely. That's the build on Facebook link I provided above.

I think that looks cleaner, hope that helps.

Your photos are not displaying. Looks like they are hosted on google photos, but need to be shared out to be view-able by the public.

If it helps, I haveJ20 axles under my WT wagoneer. I currently have stock 2006 GM 2500HD rims on it’s rollers. I am pretty sure the back spacing is 4.5”.

pics are in the link in my signature.

Thanks for the info guys, it's helpful.

Since several people PM'd me about the wide track conversion, I thought it might be helpful to post some pics. Full disclosure this was done by the previous owner who used it for hunting and did not care for the wood vinyl sides and tried to remove them unsuccessfully, so he just painted over it and left the rivets. As you can imagine, my last project on this GW will be bodywork and paint.
