Information

Post by xtapa »

I am a member of a yahoo forum and totally fed up with yahoo. I'm trying to convince them we need to set up an independent forum site and divorce ourselves from yahoo. Would you be willing to share to a novice, what forum software you use here, and how has it worked from your stand point as manager of all the hidden effort it takes to maintain it?

Thanks for all you're willing to share. I can be reached offline at davef@wvi.com

Like Tad said, this forum uses PHPBB 3. It's pretty solid as far as reliability and scale ability goes. It certainly has some annoyances, but that pretty much goes for any piece of software.

There is a pretty strong community for customizations and such. Although many of them will make upgrading a pain. I am actually considering making quite a few changes here because of the upgrading issues that I currently go through. But it's because of some of the modifications that I have made.

If you are up for paying for the software, consider going with vBulletin.

There's a lot to be said for using a common software like PHPBB too...if people want to repost something on your forum that's posted elsewhere, chances are they can just copy/paste the post code and all the tags will work in the new place too. Has really helped a lot of people coming here from IFSJA...they can move their threads without much work. May help you get more initial participation.
