Transfer case survival?

Post by jpswapmohn »

I have a lot of time and a bit of coin in the NP242 in my wagoneer, behind a 4l60e and the LT1. I want to go to a L96 and 6l80 or 90 at some point in the not too distant future. I really want to keep the 242 for the “all wheel drive” capability. It has the Tom Woods 32-spline upgrade and such in it. Any of you folks have thoughts on whether it will survive behind the 6.0L?

Other stuff that may play a role are the J20 axles with 3.73 gears. Rear 60 has a Grizzly locker in it. Front has tru-track. I plan to run something like a 285/70r17 tire (approximately 34”).
I don’t plan to use it as a trail rig at this point, but it will occasionally tow a trailer with one of the baby jeeps on it.
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

The 242 was a factory option in some Escalades with a 6.0. That version was a bit different than the Jeep one (It has a VC instead of an open center diff).

But unless you plan to abuse it, I think it should be fine.

Hey, thanks Stuka. I didn’t know the 242 was used in any of the gm family. Good to know.

I won’t abuse it when the front axle is engaged. I am sure there might be some stop light challenges once i have it in..but nothing that would bend leaf springs or anything. 8v}
