Post by wagonguy87 »

Hello! I'm curious if anyone knows what transmission fluid I should use for my 1987 grand wagoneer. it is a automatic and I don't know the last time the fluid was changed before I got it so I'm planning on changing it. thanks!!

Any dexron 3 ATF will work. I used Valvoline max life atf, works good. Don’t forget to change a filter while you’re in there

Welcome to the club!

I don't know what your long term plans are for your jeep. One fairly simple modification is to swap out this mopar transmission pan:

It has a bit more capacity (about a quart) and I think it also has a drain plug. The drain plug is nice for changing the fluid. After a few 'hard wheeling runs' I will just drain the fluid and refill. Nothing hurts a tranny more than getting the oil hot.

Totally agree with will e - get a pan with drain plug, it will make your life way better!

I didn’t do it when I was changing fluid/filter, but next time I have to drain ATF I’m getting a new pan with a drain plug (or I’ll put a drain plug in my stock pan). Taking an ATF shower is definitely not the best experience

Keep in mind it is a tight fit, so don't get a really deep pan, it will hit the crossmember. Take a look underneath the truck and you will see what I mean.

A way to prevent that is have a large enough oil pan... Losen all the bolts but keep some on onaide tight.. then pop the cover off and itll drain on the loose side.

As for fluid like mention dexron 3. I manually ( flushed) my jeep by having a friend hold the cooling line into a milk jug.. turn the Jeep on. Shift through neutral and gears turn off the engine when its almost full.. 1 gal is 4 quarts. Then i refill with 4 quarts.. and do this until about 13 or 14 quarts.

Anyway dexron 3 been fine for me the last 20k miles.

Reminds me i gatta drop the pan and change it soon in another 10k miles or so Fluids only good for 30k-50k miles for dexton 3 i believe ?
