Bypass dash switch on tailgate

Post by JWestfall »

New to this forum. Picked up a "barn find" 71 Wagoneer with the 360. Tailgate motor functions if I connect it directly to a battery, but all the switches and wires are out because prior owner was trying to do something. Can I keep it simple and wire it so just the key switch functions and bypass the dash switch (which may be missing)? If so, how? Thanks.

Yes, I think you can. When dash switch is in neutral position, it grounds both tan and brown wire going back to tailgate. If you want to eliminate it, permanently ground those two after you get rid of dash switch. Without ground present on tan and brown wires, key switch won’t work.

use a cigarette lighter plug with an inverter switch wired to the window motor, set aside, plug in as needed to switch up or down.

to add to sirrus comments... No relay, and I have used this set up for over 10 years... it is a much faster operating motion than the OEM set up that was probably hampered by poor ground and oxidized connectors -especially the one behind the rear driver side wheel that gets road spatter-

Interesting idea, if you need to operate tailgate window from inside occasionally.

On the second thought, knowing how thin cigarette lighter wiring is I would only do that if you have a relay on the tailgate motor.. however, I am sort of obsessed with putting relays everywhere :D

Need to unplug it once the window's where you want it or you'll be putting the willy to the motor alla time.

Unless it's got a center off position.

Yes, my set up has a off position in the middle. Version 1 was a plain plug and play, reverse polarity as needed. Even V2 is unplugged after use
