CJ7 Quadratrac transfer case issues

Post by PapaG »

Hello, new member here. We are looking for a part and it seems impossible to find. I have a 1978 Jeep CJ7 Golden Eagle Quadratrac with a 1339 full time w/low range transfer case and I need a part that broke. It is the Case Rear End Cap, it bolts up to the sprocket. I do not want to convert it to a part time with the kits available because I would like to keep it as original as possible. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have a photo of the past that broke?

Jeep never sold that part by itself. It was always part of the differential assembly, which is the entire part you show in your photograph. Flint is the local authority on these units, and will weigh in presently. He has a lot of experience putting a working differential together from multiple donors.

The obvious response is to find a donor transfer case and use either the entire differential from the donor or parts from your unit and the donor to build a working differential. There is a WTB (want to buy) forum here and at IFSJA where you could advertise your need of these parts, or a donor unit. You could look on car-part.com for a wrecking yard near you that has one. The BW13xx was used in automatic CJ-7s 1976-1979 and in the automatic wagons and J-trucks 1973-1979, with full-time optional for some of that range and the Dana 20 standard.

Yeah, it's definitely broken. I'm afraid you are going to have damage on the shift collar and rear output shaft as well. The only way to inspect it is to remove rear output shaft and the Edrive shifter assembly.

Shift collar. The manual refers to it as Hub - Lockup Coupling. PN 18.550-3

It is also shown here next to Shaft - Rear Output. PN 18.550-1 (red asterisk)

Also, pull this doc down and study it. Removing the rear output seal and bearing from the case is kind of a PITA.

Thanks for the great responses so far, the jeep is at a trans shop that has done a lot of these transfer cases but he cannot find the part needed and suggested I go to a part time kit. I told him I rather keep it as original as possible so I am looking for the parts. He checked everything else related and luckily there is no other damage to the shift collar or output shaft. The hunt for the parts continues...ANY help would be appreciated. That link with the Quadratrac breakdown is great, best one I have seen.

You’re going to most likely have to find a whole case to use as parts. :/

Glad to hear the other two parts I mentioned are OK. If all you need is the differential endcap, I have one.

Glad you got it all figured out. The QT is one of the few CJ parts where the best info is here on FSJ forums.
