Kayak Fishing

Post by rlars7 »

Wife tells me I need a new hobby. Jeeps will always be there but get pricey. Golf is fun but I suck (and also pricey). I have always loved kayaking but I always seem to tip the sit-in kayaks. Have paddled a few sit-on-tops and love them.

ANyone here into kayak fishing? Especially fly fishing from a kayak. I'm interested in how to get started.

I haven't been kayak fishing for about a year or so but used to do it alot here in Nevada. All fly fishing small lakes, it's alot of fun! You can cruise around slow and pick a spot to use dry flies, or what I like to do better is let out a good distance of sinking line and paddle backwards, letting the wet fly sink and trail in front of you. Works good! Mine's a sit in type with a flat bottom (wilderness systems) they are harder to tip over ;) What part of the country you at? Guess it depends on what kind of water you have there to find a kayak you like.

Thanks! I have read about the Wilderness Systems - they look like great boats. I'm in GA - mostly fishing North GA lakes but will also try to get out on the Chatahoochee (slow moving river).

One thing I am struggling with - would you recommend getting a normal kayak and converting to a fishing rig? Or buying one already out fitted for angling? Best I can see is that the normal rigs offer more customization but a little more prep work to fish from. The angling rigs are more expensive but have all the bells and whistles installed.

Any boats sugestions and/or rod and rell suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks

Hey! Im in North Georgia too. I got a old town Camden 120 angler for Christmas a couple of years ago. Its a sit in but its fairly stable. I usually paddle for fun, but ive fished a few rivers around here in it and I fished from it at the beach last year. Honestly I dont think you would need an angler a unless you plan on making it an every weekend type of thing. Mine has 2 flush rod holders, 1 swivel holder, and an anchor trolley to help position the boat better in a current. Most of it looks pretty simple to do by yourself. I love mine but honestly I dont need all the add ons since I only go a handful of times a year

Nice! Thank you. What size is your rig? Does the 120 mean 12 feet? Seems like most of the more stable fishing rigs are 10-12 feet but that seems huge to be paddling around.

What part of North GA are you in? I will be using this to fish and paddle Lake Burton.

Its 12 1/2 feet give or take a few inches. Im northeast ga. I've paddled the 7 major lakes here in Georgia as well as a few different rivers. 12 feet sounds long but if youre going to be on a lake you'll love it. The longer it is, the easier it'll be to paddle in a line. It wont turn as quick as a shorter boat, but I've had mine on some class 2 rapids and it was fine. I definitely wouldn't push it any farther than I did, but the point is it'll do it. I tried a 8 foot boat on a lake and it was a pain to keep straight. On the other hand, my parents 18ft canoe has a 1/4 mile turning radius it seems

Mine's an old Wilderness Pamlico 100 (10 feet) not an angler one, don't need it if you're fly fishing unless you want a rod holder which is convenient, but I just tuck the reel under my leg and hold it that way and when I get a bite I can really feel it instead of watching :D found this when I was looking for my kayak online, lots of good info for ya http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/kayak.html

My kayak is a little too short I think, should have gotten a 12' but oh well, it's definately hard to keep a straight line, especially when you're out and a big headwind picks up from the exact spot you want to go! Makes thing a little hairy :o I have some snippets of kayak fishing on my youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-d0mSb0mBU and here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q36qhLUPtx0 and here :-bd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaoOAI6Iw50 yeah I know there's alot of boring stuff between the fishing part lol

I converted a Old Town Otter to a fishing platform. All I added was a pivoting rod holder in front far enough ahead that it did not interfere with padding. The Otter was on sale for $250.00 and the rod holder was $4.99 in a big bin that Cabela's had in there fishing area. A hole saw and 5 minutes and converted......

There are many different configurations of a kayak hull. It is a give and take depending on what is more important to you. Speed usually gives up stability and adgility and visa versa. If you want the best stability you will want a sit in. By sitting in the bottom you lower the center of gravity better than any sit on top, because most of the weight is below the waterline. You will also have better control of the kayak. You can use your legs to lock yourself into the kayak during tricky situations.

I am looking to get another kayak for the wife. I really like the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10' Sit In Kayak. You can pick them up through Walmart for around $250.00 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sun-Dolphin-A ... k/25845710 . It is a great price since you get a Paddle, padded seat and adjustable foot braces which would be extra cost on other kayaks. Plus it has a storage hatch, which most kayaks at that price do not.

Hope this helps.

Have you guys figured out a rack for the top of our wagoneers?

My 90 wagoneer is actually my wifes and she ordered a kayak a few weeks ago.

I was leaning towards modifying the foam blocks from a cheaper kit to fit around the oem cross bars and rest on the roof so the bars are not really holding the kayak up?

Any suggestions would be great.
90 Fsj. 5.3, 4l65,241. 4" lift, Custom valved Bilstien 5125 Shocks, Dakota Digital Dash, Bjs Radiator, Bjs aluminum tank,Viper remote start, power door locks, one touch rear window. Ac, Cruise, tow haul all work as they should. Fully restored oem wheels.

I think this is the best deal out there right now. It will hold two kayaks so when you get yours your good to go. Should mount fine to a Wagoneer rack. http://www.prolineracks.com/sportrack-s ... -rack.html .

Other options shown here too http://www.prolineracks.com/kayak-racks-carriers.html .

I found a Thule rack someone was selling for a Jeep Cherokee for $50 on Craigslist and it was gutter mount and fit great on my 1975 Cherokee. I did have to buy longer cross bars for another $50. I haul a canoe and a kayak or two kayaks on it regularly. I have a Jackson Coosa and my 68 year old dad has a Jackson big rig. Both are great for river fishing.Image

Kayak fishing can but fun if you get a stable platform, most important thing I recommend is buy the best seat possible as you lower back can hurt a lot after several hours. Also make sure to get straps for all your gear in case you flip over and use a life jacket.

Don't use the most expensive gear as you could loose some. Aside from that some of my biggest bast, trout etc were caught on a kayak because its much more stealthy than a boat.

That being said, it can get pricey fast especially if you go with a Hobie with the Mirage Pedal Kayak.

Once I got over $3k I decided to sell my Kayak and get a small skiff to fish, much more comfortable and I don't have to worry about my gear and just chill if I feel like it.

Good Luck!

Kayak Fishing

Post by Greenmachine »

We try and do a family fishing trip annually and normally go to the Caney Fork or Hiwassee River in Tennessee. I have lost poles before so I second the not taking too expensive gear. I use a soft zipper tackle box and use aluminum d rings to hold it in the boat if it flips. We didn’t do it in 2020 because of COVID (although I think in a kayak on the river is about as safe a place as you could be). Hiwassee has a huge variety of fish and my dad caught a nice striper (we are rigged for trout and small mouth 6lb test light action rods).
Couple shots from 2019.
