Pictures ?: NOT Photobucket !

Post by CU4WHLN »

Hi Folks ... Old guy - tech challenged.

As I transition over to this site from the 'other" site.. I am looking to start a build thread, but my Photobucket account has blurred out .. and I don't want to pay them :banghead: Sooo -

What is the best way to insert pics into posts? ( Want pics to show - don't want folks to have to click and download )

Use a third party site? Which one works well these days?

Thoughts please? tia

Imgur. Been using them for a number of years now and have no complaints, free to use and I don't recall making an account requiring any personal info other than an email address. Host them there and them you can use a direct image URL to post them here.

One of the mods on another Jeep forum owns Beaming Pix - https://www.beamingpix.com/ Cheap but not free. Gets good reviews. This is what I would use if I no longer had my own server at work.

If you have internet at home ie Comcast or such, they give you some online storage space with the service. Not a lot, but may be sufficient.

To embed pictures stored remotely in your post, you "hot link" them into the message. The image must be stored on an internet server that is publicly accessible, ie you can type in (or copy and paste) the URL to your address bar and the image appears on a page by itself. Once you are ready to enter the image URL for your post, click on the "image" icon in the "full editor and preview." Enter the URL between the "img" http commands. Note that this is computer programming, and you must get the syntax right. You need all the characters, including all square brackets, slash and img commands. And in the right order. Not complicated, but zero fault tolerance.

If you shrink the images a bit, you can attach them to your posts. But using a hosting site like Imgur works well too if you want free.

Ok, when I drag and drop, it only gives me the option to inline as an attachment. How do I embed as an image? Copy and paste does not work.

You can put the attachment link inside img tags and it will be displayed as the full size image. Its not the best setup I know. And there are mods to make it a lot nicer. But last I looked they required changing core code which then makes doing updates to the forum a royal pain.

Does not work for me. Tried [img][attachment=0] ... and reverse order. Tried turning off my malware filter and no difference.

So, unfortunately there is no way to get the link for the attachment until after you actually post. Then go back and edit and add the image tags with the link to the attachment.

For instance, here is one of the attachments from letank:

When I edit my own post, I get the identical syntax as when I posted the image, ie [attatchment=0]<name of the file I dropped>...

If I comment to your post, I get a different style of syntax that shows an explicit URL for the attachment. No such URL when I edit my post.

I added this attachment by dragging and dropping the image into the text field, and then I clicked the "place inline" button down below.
green_waggy.jpg
Now if I right click the name of the file down below in the attachments area and select "copy link address" I can then put that link into img tags without having to go back and edit.

Ahh - Finally got registered.. working on test pics soon.
Thank you very much for the guidance folks !

EDIT: Testing . . . ( NOT going well! lol :banghead:
EDIT 2: NOPE, not yet. I am not bright I guess ? :(

20 EDIT tries LATER !!
OMG ! I am SOO SLOW. FINALLY figured it out.
UGH. Actually embarrassed - but going to leave this here for anybody else who has struggled with pic posting.

Pics for idiots: ( Well, for imgbb anyway )
1. go to your hosting site
2. select the pic you want to copy
3. Find the "Embed codes" tab.. be SURE to go to the "Direct Link" pull down.
3.5 click on "copy" in the upper right corner
4. Come back to this site.. in "Edit" mode in the post where you want pic
5. click on img tab on menu at top of the edit tab
6. the cursor will be in between the two [img icons already
7. paste the link in between the [img tabs.
8. scroll down and preview post. (pic should be there ...unless I screwed this up too !! )

Aborted tries .. how NOT to do this.

on the site you can select 'copy' for image links.

If you 'quote' this post that I made you will see the code they produce.

BTW. Nice looking rig.
