Exterior Door Handles

Post by Twagoneer »

New to the forum. My door handles are a little pitted and aged. I can't seem to find where to get replacements or what others do.. Re-Chrome? if so, where does everyone send them to get re-chromed?

You could also get them powder coated any color including something that looks close to chrome.

Unlikely there were ever any aftermarket sources for Wagoneer door handles. Whatever NOS was made, then gone.

Considering how expensive re-chroming is (if you could find a place to do it), you could prowl a lot of junk yards, or wait a long time to get some decent handles from a parts car. How good do they need to be? You can polish old chrome to remove the pits and it will look shiny. You have to keep after it once polished, since the pits will return. Unless the existing handles were destroyed, I'd clean up what I had and be proud.

Here in the SW, a lot of chromed pot metal survives a long time without pits. I sold a pair of perfect handles off a 75 Waggy to a guy on the east coast that was restoring a 60s Gladiator. He was amazed at how pretty they were. Try posting a wanted ad in the Sales Area.

Been too long ... I think I used a commercial chrome polish. Lots of online advice on YouTube and elsewhere if you look.

All my chrome like yours was pink.pittesld.. although the only real chrome on the Jeep are outside door handles. The radio antenna cover. The side mirrors and thats it. The rest is stainless steel and alluminum or plastic.

As for where i got good door handles.. junk yards. Found a Jeep with good chrome door handles and a antenna plate. The side mirrors i had to order from california. And to replace that yellow cracked plastic rain gutter trim.. i found a 78 cherokee cheif i took the the stainless ones from. But i also found a set on a 81 cherokee wide track too and sold em for 300$.

I dont think they remake em.. and chrome is expensive to do it right.. So you just gatta search junkyards. Ebay. And so forth

Perhaps a dremel tool with a wire wheel? I use it on a small scale with some stuff and it works well :)
