What Might this be?

Post by 66stepside »

This is an interesting exhaust set up, it could’ve been a boat motor? Anyone recognize the motor?

Looks like a Ford 260. It might be an early 289 also. But newer windsor engines had the heater hose hook up to the thermostat housing. This has the older split style.

As for the manifolds, not sure. They most likely aren't boat manifolds, because those would typically have water jackets in them. I am thinking they reversed them to clear the firewall. As that style has the rear outlet that doesn't point down.

Doesn't the AMC 327 dump to the front in the J-series? Maybe they are copying the original routing?

Yep, Ford, though I'd be hard-pressed to identify a 260 versus a 289. Distributor location and orientation is distinctive. Maybe the cues Stuka is looking at for the 260 are the air cleaner and such? The front sump is an interference problem for these engines in Jeeps - IIRC you can get a Bronco (?) pan and move the sump to the back.

Ross steering and hydraulic clutch, so on second thought it was a 230 originally. The engine location is way back compared to the Jeep V8s. Maybe that gives lots of room at the front for the crossover.

The 260 had the heater hoses hook up as shown here. Later engines had one of them go to the thermostat housing next to the upper radiator hose.

I think the exhaust is routed this way to clear the firewall because its mounted way far back to clear the axle.

And yes, the early 327 Jeeps had the driver side exhaust go around the front of the oil pan.

I went to go look at it in person (work was canceled due to region-wide power outages due to high winds).

So, here comes everyone’s favorite question:

What is she worth?

Probably less than they want for it, considering how it's displayed.

JMO - I would not pay much for it, considering how many issues they list. GVWR? It's probably a T-90. How can it have a new clutch and shudder into gear? Maybe they mean gear clash.

If I were selling, I’d list it for 1900 and take 1500.

There is a whole lot wrong with her for sure.

It has a lot of good parts. I have a feeling the bed is in really rough shape under that bondo.

I have seen way worse sell for $1000. $1500 seems fair, but I bet they want at least double or triple that if its being sold by a dealer.

Check back in six months. They may sell it to some sucker for that much, but seems unlikely.

Yeah, it is an interesting place for sure. They have an AMC Wagon for 6k, a 67 Chevy 2wd long bed for 8500, plus 100 other newer cars, and of course most of the vehicles look pretty tired.

I dig the rims on the truck, though. They’d be perfect for the Tremors Tribute Truck.

I saw an old CJ5 with one of those motors transplanted in it. Forward exhaust and everything. Ran Like a Rapped Ape in the sand and up hills

Am I seeing right here?
$7, XXX.XX for this ?
I agree w Stuka, MAYBE $1,500.00,
But only if you can put 20 miles on it, make sure the TC functions and goes Into drive 4X4, and the thing doesn’t overheat and leak MORE out of the seals it has already displayed leaks.

I was looking for to upgrade stuff too.
I just picked up this beefy unit for $4K, W 47K Orig miles J20.

I agree. I think they think because it’s for charity they can ask way too much. They “do not negotiate”. It’s a bit crazy. I do like the agricultural rims, though. But not 8k worth.

Yeah, it certainly has potential, but not for 8K as it sits.

I have a '51 Willys truck with a 289 in it. It's been a great motor.

Mine only has the forward manifold on the driver's side to clear the steering box. I always assumed it came off from a 292 or a 312, because they had a crossover pipe in front on top. (Another great engine from the past..)

If it's actually worth 8K, then a new Gladiator must certainly be worth 70K... :-bd
