91 Grand Wagoneer stalls

Post by Justforfun. »

Hello - So trying to figure out why my Jeeps stalls? Most of the time it only stalls right after I start the engine and drive about 100 yds. Sometimes when it sputters, I hit the gas I can avoid the stall. But recently after driving a little and I park, if I try to start soon after , I can't get it the start. I wait about 15 min later and it starts.
Here's what as been done on the jeep recently - new starter, Carb, alternator, ignition coil, fuel filter.
Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

Does it have the return line filter installed correctly and close to carb?

Thanks - Is that the fuel filter? I know the lower nipple should be directly above larger nipple. I'll have to move that a little.

Yes. Should be located on the top side of the motor with the return port facing the carb, but also at 12:00 position. Also, is the choke set properly? Idle mix adjusted correctly with vacuum gauge?

Ok fixed the fuel Filter, Car still wouldn't start after I drove it around. , no spark from coil. So replaced the coil, still no spark. Going to replace the distributor.

Its either the magnetic pickup in the distributer getting hot (it will start working again when cold), or its the ignition module.

You can replace the pickup by itself, although its a bit of work to get it aligned correctly. If you replace the distributer, make sure to keep the gear off the old one and put it on the new one.

You can have the module tested by some auto parts stores, although not all of them have the tester anymore these days.

So got around to replacing the distributer and coil lines. After I got it home and started to drive up driveway, the engine clicked/coughed and then stalled? Tried again and pushed the petal down to keep the engine going. Started again another day and still the same problem. I've replace most of the parts and still have problems?

Still no spark... suspect the ignition module... check for goo under the ignition module...
or the ignition switch on top of the steering column... if you wire directly from the battery + to the coil +... it is OK for a short time... the voltage is higher and the coil will heats up really fast

From your first post I was almost thinking EGR stuck opened... I had the same issue... starts fine... drive 200 yards... first stop sign... stalls... restart but has less power... and poor idle... so I replaced the ignition module... yeahhhh, it runs... dang next week... the same... distributor... then back to stalling... connect vacuum gauge to intake manifold... it is bad, barely 10 inch of HG.... hummmm EGR... disconnected... runs... has more power.... and back to 21 inch of Hg...

Replaced the ignition module, definitely sounds better when idling but when I start to go the engine coughs when I have the pedal halfway down. Most times it will just stalls. After I get it going again, I don't seem to have any problems. Replace fuel filter, distributer, Ignition module, starter, carb, alternator. Stalling always seems to be the problem??
