Need J-10 rear axle with 2.73 dif

Post by yazro »

HI- I have an 82 J-10 with an 2.73 AMC 20 rear end. The ring and pinion is shot. I'm looking for solutions or parts. The 2.73 R&P is discontinued. If you have parts or ideas, please let me know. Thanks

I reheated both axles in mine. The 2.73s were good for the freeway, but bad at everything else. Best mood I ever did to it.

I do not not, I regeared it in 2007.

2.73's from any M20 will work though. Including Wagoneers and Cherokees.

Where are you located? If you put that in your profile it will appear with every post. There are Jeep wrecking yards that might be able to help you. I'd also try car-part.com and look for an '80s Wagoneer/GW or J10 axle with that ratio.

Possible that someone will have used 2.73 M20 gears that you can use. Try here and at IFSJA, plus on maybe jeepforum.com - The CJs used that axle too (only the center part is the same) and someone might have used gears for you.

Hummer H1's used that ratio as well with a AMC 20 differential. So Steel Soldiers may be a resource as well.

Not sure if you are looking to get a new axle built, or where you are located, but East Coast Gears built my front HD-44 and rear D60 to J-20 specs (except the extras I wanted) for what I thought was a reasonable cost. They used their new centers and tubes. They are located in the Raleigh/Durham NC area. Great folks to work with. I also took my YJ Mutt to them to repair some significant damage I did to the axles being stupid..
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.
