If it helps to speak to the reliability and strength of the NSG-370, it is rated at 272 lb ft of TQ input. I put 400 lb ft through one in a 4500# JK and 430 HP and boy I was not nice to her. Never broke anything in the drivetrain on or off road.

Only issue I had with the NSG370 was shifting into second when it was cold, as it was really crunchy until it warmed up. But otherwise it was fine for the 9 years that I drove it in my old JK.

It was also used in 2012+ JK's with the Pentastar V6 that makes WAY more power than a 4.0 in much heavier vehicles than a TJ.

Yes, that's one of the main reasons I shopped so long. Wanted that transmission. At only 46k miles and 13 years, I plan to drop what is probably the original fluid this weekend and go with Royal Purple Synchromax. 1st gear in the NSG-370 is almost unusable on the street. Can start in 2nd almost anywhere. But it sometimes is a touch more difficult shifting from 1st to 2nd. Not bad though.

I have the NSG370 in my 2012 behind the pentastar. I'm not always nice to it and it's doing just fine for me with 60K miles on the clock.

I did replace the factory clutch at around 32K miles but only because I installed a different transfer case and was already more than halfway into the teardown. I installed a Centerforce II kit with new heavier flywheel and it's much better than the factory stock clutch.

That trans in my JK is the only one I've had that I ACTUALLY noticed a difference when switching to Royal Purple. I bought it brand new, and before I put that many miles on it, I changed the trans oil over to RP, and it was quieter and smoother. I was surprised, it wasn't even the reason I did it.

I had an 2006 auto LJ for 4 years or so. I bought it with 30k on it and used it as a spare vehicle and only put around 20k on it before I got rid of it. I liked it but it was always too gutless with the auto for my liking. I felt like I had to strain the guts out of the thing to accelerate. I think a 4.8 or 5.3 in one would be about the perfect jeep.

I have a 2007 jku now and the 3.8 is a turd too but with 5.13 gears it wakes up a little bit. The Rubicon version of the lj with a 5 or (2005-2006) 6 speed would probably be pretty good.
