Went for a test run

Post by Stuka »

So I got new gears installed in the JK earlier this week. Ended up having them done at a local shop, I just don't have the time to take my daily driver down for long enough to do it myself. I went from 3.21 gears to 4.56 gears. And wow, what a difference. Should have come this way from the factory. Makes the anemic V6 feel like it has some power.

My Wife and I headed up over Sonora Pass today to see how they did. It has a section just above 7k feet that is a 26% grade (Yes, 26 percent!). And it handled it well. Also took a run on a quick easy trail to a lake that sits at 10k feet. And as it happened, we have been having some high mountain storms. So it was poorly rain and there was flash flood advisories (We had to cross two creeks to get to the lake). Although the snun poked out now and then. And with the way the gearing is now I was able to do basically the whole thing in 2wd. Before I had to use low range or the engine would lug down and stall. The NSG370 trans that I have has a 4.46:1 first gear, which isnt quite a granny, but is lower than most these days.

I would love to take my J10 up there, but there is no way it would handle those grades. Maybe when it gets a new engine, but right now it literally would not have the power to climb those grades at those altitudes.

Here are a few photos of the trip. The big lake is Donnel Lake.

When I can afford to regear, that will be what I use. 4.10 is close, but still not quite enough gear.

Beautiful views Brandon, don't have anything like that in the midwest.

Wow, beautiful scenery!

Nice JK too! Glad the gearing is working out for you.

Has it affected gas mileage much?

Yeah I am very fortunate to live where I do. This is all very close to me.

It sure is nice being able to use all 6 gears again. Will find out my mileage this week when I fill up. I had just reprogrammed the ECU for my tire size and gears on Friday.

I consider myself very lucky to live where I do. If you ever head out west, let me know. Will show you around :)

Very Nice!

I've been struggling with regearing my J10's stock axles or go with a set of J20 axles that I bought from Hoot!
