I've always had a soft spot for the Pacer and Gremlin. Such ugly cars, but still charming.

Gremlin competed with the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto.

I'd chose the Gremlin without a question. They actually sold really well, along with the Pacer. The Pacer was a great idea: luxury car feel with compact car economy. Trouble was, it was so darn heavy that the economy part didn't work out too well.
1972 Wagoneer: 360 2V, THM-400, D20, D30 closed knuckle, D44 Trac-lok 3.31.
1965 Rambler Ambassador: 327 4V, BW M-10 auto, AMC 20 3.15.
1973 AMC Ambassador: 360 4V, TC-727.
1966 AMC Marlin 327 4V, T-10 4 speed, AMC 20 Powr-lok 3.54.

That could be fixed with a 401.

The weight was because they had to re-engineer the car from frontwheel drive to RWD when the planned GM rotary/FWD platform tanked. I really want a 79/80 wagon with the raised hood/grill design to put a 4.0L with EFI and AW4 into.

Just push the button on the tailgate to let the air out of the body, then you'll have a Gremlin...

The last Pacer I had was a '77 wagon with 258 and lockup 998. It got a pretty steady 20 mpg even with all my ex-girlfriend's junk she dragged everywhere with her. She took that car when she left too!

My dad was an AMC guy, he bought my mom a Nash Metropolitan before I was born. He always seemed to drive Ramblers of one kind or another. My fav was his deep metalic blue '68 Ambassador. We always had AMCs around our house.
