97 TJ, blown D35?

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

I'm looking at a 97 TJ that has something funky going on with the D35 rear end. It will only move in 4WD and if it gets shifted to 2WD nothing happens, driveshaft spins and the speedometer climbs but there's no movement at the wheels. There is a clanging noise only when it's in motion down the road that kinda sounds like bad u-joints.

I know to be 100% sure of what's going on the differential cover needs to be pulled off but what's most likely the culprit, spider gears or ring&pinion?

The stock gearing for this rig is 3.07 but I happen to have a functional pair of axles from a 97TJ that are 4.11's. If I swapped the axles over will it throw anything off with the computer due to the gear ratio change? It's a 4.0L 5spd so with stock tires it should feel like the Jeep grew a serious pair, right? :D

Most likely the spiders from what you describe.

The 4.11's will work fine, but your speedo will be off. '97 TJ's do not have traction control, stability control, or ABS. So the computer wont care much. If it was an automatic, the shift points would get messed up, it would end up shifting to a really high gear earlier than it should.

To get the speedo right, just change out the speedo gear in the tail housing.

It's a 5spd.

Guessing it's too late to weld the spiders. ;)

33/9.50/15s will put you very close to correct speedo/power band.

And also result in more broken D35 parts :P

D35 axles in those vehicles are infamous for snapping axle shafts. If it was a axle shaft then the tire and axle will slide out of the housing due to the "C-clip" design. Buy it for as cheap as you can and replace rear axle with a D44 or Ford 8.8 and have a much better setup.

That's what I'm thinking. Not in the market for another vehicle but hard to turn down a $500 Jeep!

Went to take another look and it turned into "Oh you're interested? I saw one of these in good condition at a Dodge dealership go for $xxXX so that's what my rusty, broken, high-mileage, 17 year old Jeep with a gernaded rear axle is worth."

Pass.

Thanks for the info guys.

Good call...If you get another opportunity on one like that, toss the 35, drop in a 44 or Ford 8.8 and don't look back.

If it's got the 5 speed and the 6 cyl., then drop a set of 4.56 gears to run 33s, if it's got the 3 speed auto, 4.11 will work just fine. If it's got the 4 speed auto, 4.56 again. 4.88 gears would be needed if it's got the 4 cyl, or if you bump it up to 35s.

A 3" lift and a 1.25" BL will get you comfortably into a set of 33s, 4" and a BL will net you 35s.

If you do pick up a TJ, head over to wranglerforum.com, I'll cya there.
