Name that snorkel

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

Found on a Jeep site south of the border. Not sure if it's strictly for the Wagoneer or if it's made to fit from another Jeep.

It appears this is an original design made in-house by the seller.

I didn't know Venezuela had an FSJ community. That Wag in the background looks to be in decent condition.

Thought it was an original design, wasn't sure though.

Wonder if they ship up here?

They actually have quite a bit of FSJ community down there. It is kind of sickening really! My understanding of the story is that AMC shipped the punches and dies for FSJ panels down to South America AFTER they were phased out in North America and continued producing and selling FSJ's (including four door J-trucks) for years to come.

I seem to recall that we had a decent number of South American FSJ owners on IFSJA.org and they were having semi routine meet and greets down there and posting pictures.

Some day when I decide to go overlanding to the southern tip of South America, I hope to connect with one or more of these groups along the way!

I am sure they would. Not sure if Jeep/Fiat/Chrysler would take exception to the unlicensed use of the "Jeep" logo though.

I was wondering the same thing but I'm sure they've got bigger fish to fry....However if they hit financial trouble again I just may be that fish.

Asked about shipping, will post my findings.

Still nit sure why anyone would need a snorkel. The top of my carb is a good 5.5 feet from the ground with SOA and springs. Now a periscope would be cool. :)

And for dust.

Didn't they get factory third row seats too?

And bigger straight sixes?

And weren't the southern FSJ's taller from the factory?

Can't answer those questions but they did build a really sweet 4 door J20 with an enclosed bed comparable to an Excursion.

Forgot about the 282. There was an AMC of Latin America called "VAM". The IFSJA article might have said that, didn't look.

Come to think of it the J trucks from south of the border had IHC tailgates, bumpers and Scout tail lights.

I'll try and find a photo, there was a thread on ifsja.

I would name that snorkel "Kaa" after the snake in Jungle book. It looks kind of like a snake.

I have a neighbor that owns property in Chile and travels there every winter. Can they send to a Chilean address? Another option is that I have a contact in Bogota Columbia that I could possibly get in contact with but there is a slim chance at that.

It would take a significant amount of time to acquire but I think it would be a remote possibility of making this work. Not sure how much interest there would be but possibly set up an import path to bring some in. Might consider taking the logo off them so there isn't any legal conflict down the road with Fiat Chrysler.
