Jacobs '78 Cherokee

Post by 78CherokeeChief »

Howdy
My name is Jacob, im 16 years old and this is my first post. I recently got a 1978 Cherokee chief. My dad Scott Roberts (the red Wagoneer that got hit by the RTD bus) is also a member of the website and thought it would be a good idea for me to make an account on the website now that im going to be going with him on the trips. I have a stock 360 engine in it. Edelbrock carborator and i have a spring over conversion on the front axel with 6 inch blocks in the rear that will soon be removed. 35" tires with beautiful black rims. Its a tan/rust color right now but birthday is in May and i asked for a paintjob from all my family members. So its soon to be a dark blue.

Its the Rhino Grille. Its not stock but when i bought the Jeep it came with that one and a Razor Grille. I could sell it for quite a bit but i like how it looks.

He is very proud of his rig! When we got it from Reno it had a QT with a big hole in the case. Since then we have swapped it out with a good QT from my parts rig, we swapped exhaust too, as well as a bunch of interior stuff. The engine runs surprisingly well for all the stupid crap the PO did. Once we can save a few bucks I will help him do a shackle flip in the rear to get rid of those dangerous 6" blocks in the rear. The PO did SOA in the front but didnt bother to do anything with the steering so we will address that as well.

Jacob and I spent a few hours working on his Chero today. Here is the list

-Replace the steering gear box with a new J20 box
-Installed drop pitman arm
-Installed the lengthened front drive shaft
-He did his first oil change ever, made him do it on his own
-Replaced all the belts

After driving it up and down the street for the first time ever, we noticed a loud clunk when hard braking in both drive and reverse. After some looking around we figured out that the DSPO never welded the front spring perches to the axle tube when he did the spring over so the whole axle is rotating in the U-bolts when braking, doh!! :banghead: This would explain why the front driveshaft wouldn't fit when we tried to reinstall it and also explains why the tierod hits the bottom of the springs.
