Glad you ventured over from the Facebook! Nice truck, I was lusting over a clean super wag with a 455 swap but it never worked out. This makes me even more bitter about missing it!
I'm glad you found that cracked hub before something ugly happened!
So I ended up swapping in a 14 bolt with disc brakes and now I think I may need a booster and don’t know what I need. It’s driving me crazy. Everyone is telling me to get hydroboost. But I don’t have power steering either and I need it to run that type of booster. Thoughts?
I really dig this truck, partially because is resembles mine quite a bit! Any updates on the rear hub fix?
73 J4000. 360, MC 2100, T18A, D20, stock closed knuckle Dana 44 front, 60-2 rear. Warn Lock-O-Matics, Warn/Belleview electric winch, true duals with glasspacks, old-school front diff skid plate, used 265 Toyos on 16" AR wheels.
Those style hubs are probe to cracking by the keyway and warpage. I know Crown Auto.otive makes them for a Dana 53 rear. Not sure if they would work on a Dana 44 though. Google Crown and see what you come up with.

Sorry, didnt see the 14bolt swap comment at first. As far as brakes i swapped a XJ booster/master/proportioning valve setup onto mine. Minor mod but it works well

Fantastic I think I’ve go an XJ booster laying around.

If you have drum brakes up front be prepared for chest-to-steering wheel full frontal lockup during hard braking with that prop valve. Not for the faint of heart. Normal conditions its perfectly fine though. Just dont do a panic stop without white knuckles gripping the wheel and planting your feet to the floor lol

Haha yup I’ve heard horror stories. I’m picking up an 8 lug chevy 44 for it soon. Was just hoping to enjoy it a bit while the weather was nice and then swap in the 44 in the winter. Came across other problems. Tank rusted and got into the fuel lines and the th400 started acting up. Sounded like it had a super charger. So I’m thinking about what to about the tranny.
Glad to see the truck is still around. Any chance you would put a manual trans in it?

I’ve thought about it. A 3 spd with a big block for its intended purpose would suck. I want to tow with it but I’m also just wanting to enjoy it a bit before winter comes.
Nice truck! I've got a 70 J3000 with the Rocket in it, used the factory Buick/T18 bell housing. You were wise to upgrade the axle, I shredded the 44 laying into it in second gear (T18 trans/Dana 20). If you want some advice on putting a 4 speed in it I can help as I've done a few, if you weren't going to be heavy towing or wheeling I'd suggest a Muncie as it's the easiest. I'm running a 70 Scout that I put a 455 Olds, Muncie 4-speed mated to the Dana 20, that things a blast. I also have a T18/D20 combo that is setup to bolt to a conventional GM bell housing, it was in a parts truck I bought years ago that someone along the line put a SBC in it and had it adapted very nicely to the T18. I may be convinced to sell it as I've had it for years and as cool as it is..... And I will be passing near there in the near future.
