Re: Who's running an RTT?
You may need to be more specific?
RTT could mean lots of things.

Re: Who's running a Roof-Top-Tent?
I have a tent and about to make a bed rack for the 82 j10 and give it a go. I originally had it on a ‘20 JT but that truck is gone with what I’ll briefly describe as “quality” issues in the newer jeeps.

Re: Who's running a Roof-Top-Tent?
I tend to camp in the same spot for a couple of days. A RTT would require a bit of packing each day if I want to head out wheeling.

I love wheeling and camping, the freedom that creates and the night views you get no other way. However I hate setting up camp, so RTT’s intrigue me. If setting up or breaking camp takes more than 10 minutes wet or dry I’m frustrated. So I’m staying tuned to see what discussion happens here.
The bus I ride is so short it is a yellow Smart Car full of squirrels, monkeys and clowns.

That’s the only real reason I’m considering it. Covering lots of ground and setting up/tearing down fast.Yeller wrote: ↑Sat Jul 24, 2021 5:32 pmI love wheeling and camping, the freedom that creates and the night views you get no other way. Re: Who's running a Roof-Top-Tent?
I built my foam square drop. Only weighs 450lbs dry. Goes with me every trip that I spend a night or more out. I keep all my camp gear in it so it is always ready to go. If you want to wheel for the day, it stays in camp. I can have camp set up and tore down within 10 minutes. No flapping in the wind and no putting it away wet. No wind brake or extra weight on top the of the vehicle.
Just some thoughts on a alternative.

There's a youtube guy with a roof top tent on a grand wag, termite off road. It's intriguing and he has some good setup tips. I have no experience with them but he totally does, hopefully that helps!

That's a cool channel! Here's a link if someone's can't find it - Termite Offroad. Rack they built looks very strong, but it's probably a awful lot of extra weight on the roof. Raising center of gravity and stuff...Renodemona wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 4:48 pmThere's a youtube guy with a roof top tent on a grand wag, termite off road. I'm planning to get a RTT for my JL Wrangler as soon as I can get my hands on good roof rack for it, so over past couple months I've did quite a lot of research about RTTs. You'll definitely need a good sturdy rack for it.
There are 2 types of tents - hard shell (HS) and soft shell (SS):
- SS are more common (because they're much cheaper, smittybuilt one start at $1100-ish) and usually lighter (150ish lbs, depends on the size), but they take much more time & effort to set up and especially take down when compared to HS
- HS are more expensive ($2500+), usually weigh more (one exception being GFC Superlite at just 80 lbs, but they are always sold out). HS are much easier to set up/take down as it's usually just a matter of undoing couple latches and pushing it up (for clamshells it is really under 1 minute). They also handle wind better if positioned correctly (SS tents flop around a lot)
Sometimes we reinvent the wheel not to have more wheels but to have more inventors
