I have a 71 Wagoneer 360 that currently has the Eaton power steering pump. I would like to upgrade to the Saginaw that almost every Wagoneer came with after 71. Has anyone done this? I am assuming new brackets and pump, but from which years?
Thanks
Jon
I don't think they changed much. You'll want the pump, brackets, belt and hoses from a later FSJ. Keep in mind the fittings changed for 79 on the gearbox for sure, and possibly the pump. Best bet would be to take the whole shebang, pump, lines and gearbox off the same donor vehicle so you know it all works together. The later gearboxes have some advantages like a better ratio. These are all standard GM parts (except the pump brackets) so it shouldn't be too difficult to find parts.
1973 was the first year for the Saginaw PS pump, and both it and the Eaton are shown in the above book.
I believe '71 was the first year for the revised water pump, and it should have the same pulley deck height as later years. This newer pump has a higher deck height and a larger bearing. You should be ok with pulley alignment if you get Saginaw brackets that are close to 1973. The '74-80 book is available for purchase, but not online AFAIK. Not expensive on CD-ROM at RockAuto, if you need that.

Really, the AMC on the '71s didn't get a Saginaw? I figured since my Buick had one and I knew the later ones got one that they'd just stuck with Saginaw the whole time.
Brackets shouldn't be hard to find, I would think off a later one would be fine. Worst case you'd need the whole pulley assembly, unless you have something screwy with the harmonic balancer or the water pump.
Personally I'd look into the Saginaw 2 with a ZJ steering box, but that's just me.
There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Parts book illustration shows Eaton prior to '73. You could read the listings and learn more.
I've only ever seen the Saginaw on the Buicks. Maybe it's a Buick thing from the factory, or maybe a lot of Jeep guys put the pump off a Skylark (which is a Saginaw) on it right out of the box, because it bolts right on.

Thanks for all the info. I have found a place that sells brand new Saginaw pumps with brand new mounting brackets for our Jeeps at $320. Since I have no local wrecking yard, that's almost cheaper than getting used brackets off ebay and a pump from a parts store. I might go that route.
I parted a 72 last year with a Saginaw pump (AMC 360). Jeep both under Kaiser and the early AMC years tended to have more than one supplier for some parts. My 70 era Factory Service Manual shows Eaton pumps on 327's, Saginaw on 350's and Thompson (TRW) on 232's.
