Changing pinion bearings requires completely disassembling the differential and resetting the preload on the pinion, reinstalling the carrier and double checking the pattern on the gear. Not horrible if you have the tools, but it’s a full day job.
The bus I ride is so short it is a yellow Smart Car full of squirrels, monkeys and clowns.

Best to buy a kit with bearings shims etc. https://www.amazon.com/USA-Standard-Gea ... r=8-3&th=1

A "clamshell" bearing puller set is also really handy to get things apart without destroying them https://www.amazon.com/GXL-Carrier-Pini ... e904010ad0

You'll also need a press to install the bearings and a dial indicator with mag base to check lash.

Thanks, guys. I really don't want to do that job if I don't have to...and if I do have to, I'll probably be on the hunt for a Trutrac or something to throw in the back while I'm there.

For an EV conversion I want to put the motor on the axle, with a 2-speed transmission, so that part is irrelevant for what I do now.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.
