Does this look like 3.54 gears on the tag ?

Post by candymancan »

Changing the fluids in my J10 aince the major work is done now besides my leaf springs.

And the tag in the back is so far gone its hard to read any words.. cleaned it up as best i could and i can only make out some stampings.

But the bottom right it looks like it says 3 then a big space between and 54.

But from tags ive seen on dana 44s usually its stamped on the other side of the tag.. but that side all i can make out is 46 and that makes no sense to me for gearing.

Here is the pic.. also how do i tell if its limited slip or not.. I dont think i can just jack the rear axle up and spin the wheels due to it being quadratrac. So id have to jack all 4 up right lol ? Or can i look for something specific in the diff itself. The cover is off.

Just dont wanna put basic gear oil in if its got a lsd

No limited slip from the factory with Quadratrac.

A limited slip axle would have a tag that says to use the special oil. You could also open it and look.

Look at the TSM. 3.54 will be listed as the standard ratio, I expect. My '77 has 3.54s. You can also look at the tooth count stamped into the ring gear, ie "41 11" is 41/11 = 3.73. This is also on the tag. ... 46/13 = 3.5385 approx 3.54

There will be a Jeep Corp part number too, maybe 535xxxx or some other 7-digit number like 536xxxx or 812xxxx or 813xxxx.

Yes i aee the beggining if 53 on the top right.. and bottom right i see 46.

Then 3 54 on the bottom left i think. But the 46 per what you just said.. then its probly 3.54

What am i looking for in the diff to find if its lsd anyway ? There was no 2nd tag.

Why does quadratrac not allow lsd in the back ? My 5.9 zJ has a lsd dana 44.. and its quadratrac with a viscous coupler.. same concept with clutch plates etc.. Looks like the gear oil was never changed.. It was super super thick.. and had a ton of metal powder in the goop at the bottom. It looked like the aluminum antiseize lol. Was actually kinda hard to clean over what im used too.

Look at the ring gear if you have it open.

I don't want to get into a discussion re Quadratrac and posi. Search for old posts if you want to catch up on that issue. Suffice - no posi from the factory with QUadratrac.

It's an open diff. Post a picture if you are unsure.

Oit of the probly 12 dana axles ive seen.

This is the first with these weird small holes. What are these ? Do i need to keep silicone away when i put the cover on or what ?

The TSM will answer your question. Did you look? Check figures 10-51 and 10-81.

I think they are for using a case spreader…which makes removing the carrier easier. But I’ve never used one. A crow bar usually works fine. Don’t let it hit you in the face though ;~>

Don’t worry about the silicone.

I concur with 3.54 gears being the answer.
