Failed CA Emissions - 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Post by flussbuffel1975 »

My "new" 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (from MI) failed CA emissions

I am having trouble finding the correct parts -- hoses seem to be one of the major issues.

I am also looking for a diverter valve and can't seem to find one for the year (1991) can I use one from 1986?

California has both a tailpipe and visual inspection for all cars '76 and newer. You will need all the original equipment, and it must work.

The '86 diverter valve will probably work. You picked this drawing from somewhere online... does it show a part number? Does that number match what they used in '86? Lacking part numbers on the original page, there is a parts book at the Tom Collins site 88J that should cover this. Gather the part numbers and see what overlaps. If you strike out there, you might post in the WTB (want to buy) section here or at IFSJA for used parts. I expect you will have to improvise. Diverter valves were used on many different cars, and you should be able to find one that will work.

IME California pick-a-part yards have quite a few older cars. In your position, I'd go look at Chevys and Fords from the same era and try to find work-alike parts and hoses.

You could also convert to fuel injection. Howell has a kit with a CARB approval number that eliminates most of the emissions gear, including air injection. Ca $1500. Once converted, it will pass. This is the easiest route.

California SMOG Fail - 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Post by flussbuffel1975 »

I failed a smog test in my "new," 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I am told I need an Air Bypass Diverter Smog Gulp Valve. I can't seem to find one. Can I use one for any year and/or would a chevy model work?

Would any of these work?

eBay items, yes probably. You just have to have the valve on there and function enough to pass the tailpipe test. Visual, but the tech will look for the devices and that they are connected and not disabled.

Are you fixing this yourself? Did you get a list of why you failed from the inspection station?

Did you read my reply in your duplicate thread? You now have three threads in the same forum with the same question. This will not endear you to the moderator. A thread is supposed to localize a topic, not spread it around.

1) What else are you missing?

2) did you go thru the roller test for all 4 gas, or the test was aborted?

your choices seem good, here is the one on the 85. The whole issue is the plumbing from the air pump to the diverter to the cat #17 and to the AIR valves #2 (same # for the cat back flow preventer) on each side of the exhaust manifold. At one time the plastic connector going to both air valve #4 desintegrated, so did hose #9 from the air pump

call these guys. They should be able to get you what you need. I had my jeep registered in AZ so I don't have to deal with emissions things.
