Front door window channel

Post by 69gladiator »

I’m attempting to install new front door window channels in my 82 Cherokee. So far can only slip it down about three inches along the side. I lubed everything with silicone. Do I have remove the glass to slide the channel all the way down? The BJs tutorial page shows installing it while the vent window channel is out. I wasn’t planning on removing the vent window assembly.

I have not done it myself. But from what I have read (here and IFSJA) is that the main glass needs to be out. However, everybody says to NOT remove the vent window, because its a pita to reinstall.

When I did this for my J20, I removed everything from the doors. The window channel was no problem; the vent window seal was more trouble. I don't recall that removing the division bar with the vent window attached was difficult. May be harder with electric windows.

Suggest you follow the instructions in the TSM. At a minmum, you will need to remove the door glass. Section 3-J, free to read and download on the Tom COllins site.

If this is the top & back seal, the door chanel has small imperfections where the welds are, and you might need to go up inside and grab the seal with needle nose pliers to get it started. Just did my front doors on my '84 GW a couple weeks back, used liguid soap liberally as it will wash off easily, and did find the same issue when trying to get the seal/wipe to initially start down between the glass and door frame. Took the soap and squirted a lot at about midway up of the window opening, and let it run down, as it needs to lube the area where window starts to pressure against the door frame, so the seal can be pulled in while window is in place. You could try a flat piece of 1/2" banding strap from underneath (or something similar in width as the chanel inside for door frame seat), to push up in the door channel, so the seal/wipe can ride that for a few inches over the top of the initial imperfections, until you can get it pushed down into the door far enough, and get ahold of the tail to pull it in from below.
Window needs to be most of the way up to start, then run it down while pulling on the seal, as this is helpful when seal starts seating against the window, the further the seal goes down.

The liquid soap and some needle nose pliers along with some manipulation of the window up and down, did the trick.
