Torque converter suggestions

Post by TeaBag »

Looking for recommendations on a replacement stock torque converter for a 91 GW with the 727. I don't really want to change stall speeds or anything like that. Stock or close to stock is perfectly fine. I do street driving and occasionally pull a light trailer. Motor is a little bit spruced up but nothing radical.

Why are you replacing it?
Not performing or just failed?

It was replaced with a High stall torque converter years ago, and I absolutely hate the way it drives.

Oh, I was going to recommend a TCI 2000 stall converter. I installed one in my '87 shop truck with a Shift Kit and it is the best street performance change Ive made. It hits stall at 45 mph with 35" tires.

Makes more sense what you are asking for. Should be able to simply purchase an OEM converter, so it drives like a regular DD?

Yes. A quality Pemba replacement would be ideal.

In my case, any gear with more than half throttle applied puts the engine RPM at 2000. Meaning, that the engine is always closer to its peak torque compared to the OEM converter that stalls at 1300 RPM. Im sorry, all my FSJs are turds until the RPM gets above 2500 and the sweet spot is closer to 3K.

I called Hughes and they helped me select one that’s much more pleasant than stock at a reasonable price. I highly recommend

are you really sure its a torque converter issue and not a botched shift kit install or internal trans issue, have you checked the trans pressures, or diagnose the trans a bit more. seems to me thats a lot of work to drop the trans and xfer case install a tq converter and find the problem still exists,

I second Hughes. I went more for driving/economy/light towing and low stall. 503FUEL was the part number they spec'd. Just make sure they know it's for the AMC 727 and not the Mopar as there is no ring gear required. FWIW, I'm rocking the same convertor behind the LS now with no issues.

Thanks all for the reponses. I called and talked to hughes today and there recommendation for me based on my CAM (Elgin E-912-P) was a 2K stall converter. Their thoughts were the 503FUEL would be too tight. I am going to send them what I have now and they will rebuild it to get me what I want. :-)
