Are my locking hubs stock

Post by dturner0528 »

Hey guys, I’m new here, and new to FSJs, so please forgive this probably obvious question.

I have a 1982 Limited Waggy (At least I assume it is; the guy I bought it off of on CL from didn’t mention the ‘Limited’ part, but I found a metal ‘Limited’ decal under the front seat, and it seems to have power everything: windows, mirrors, seats, cruise control, etc). Also, it’s an automatic transmission, if that helps at all. I’m assuming a 3 spd. The waggy is not operational yet, but getting close to it. (it did turn over and drive around the block; we're rebuilding the engine)

My question is about the 4x4 part. I believe that Quadra-Trac was still used in ’82 (correct me if I’m wrong), and I want to know what I have: Quadra or Selec. I have locking hubs on the front. I know that kits were sold to change Selec-Trac to locking hubs, but I also want to know if they were ever stock. If what I have are indeed aftermarket hubs, where would the 4x4 switch be on the dash, because I can’t seem to find it? I’ve heard that some serious crap could happen if one tries to drive with the hubs locked and the switch turned off.

Also, on a related note, while underneath changing the tranny filter, I noticed some kind of wire coming out of the transfer case. The part that attached to the transfer case is on a removable pivot. The other end has been cut, and is just hanging down. It resembles brake cable for a bicycle. Did this have something to do with the 4x4 at all? Possibly altered when the previous owner installed the hubs (if they aren't stock)

Again, sorry for being a NOOB. This is not my first vehicle, but the first one that I actually care to learn how it operates. Any insight here would be spectacular. :)

There was *A* quadra-trac, but it was not the BW1339 as used in the 70's. It was an NP219. However the NP219 never came with hubs, and putting hubs on it would cause damage to it in very short order if they were ever to be unlocked.

NP208 equipped 80+ FSJ's did come with factory hubs however, and they say "Jeep" on the dial.

Best way to find out what you have is to look at the round tag on the back of the t-case. It should say NP219 AM, or NP208 AM.

EDIT: fixed what the tags should say.

Alright, thanks for the info. The hubs do say Jeep on them, so maybe they are stock. I'll need to check the transfer case next time I'm working at it at my dad's. (he's the one with the garage. :) )

Any input on the loose wire on the transfer case?

If it looks like a bicycle brake cable, with a big nut holding it to the transfer case, then it the speedo cable.

Would love to see pics of those lockout hubs...

That's what it looks like, yeah. Alright. That's good to know. A bit irritating, obviously, but at least it means nothing wrong mechanically. As far as that goes at least. I'm a bit dumb, so if one of you guys wouldn't mind enlightening me as to where the cable should be heading (where I can start looking for the other end) that'd be great.
I'll take a picture of the hubs next time I'm at my dads- should be Tuesday. He'll be working then, but that'll leave me time for some cosmetics. :) working on cleaning up and painting the undercarriage. Gotta love that creeper.

If it has cruise control, it will go to a box on the drivers front inner fender, if no cruise, then through the firewall to the speedo. ;)

It does have cruise control (lucky too; it'll help keep me from pounding that gas pedal. Kinda. :D ) very nice. Always learning. Thank you very much.

Hey, welcome to the group.

A few pics will help. We can speculate on what might be but pics will really help. For example, my 82 cherokee came with a 219 but I swapped it out for a 208 from a wagoneer (including front hubs). After 30 years it is hard to know for sure.

wires going to the transmission are for the reverse light & Nss.

You won't have a 1339 in a 82 it will be a 229 or 219 or 208.

If it doesn't have a switch on the dash under the glove box but it has a lever on the floor. It 's most likely a 208 Part time with factory hubs. No other model came with hubs.

you still nee to verify.
