Carb on a 4.0

Post by jaber »

Back story, I'm building my Willys P/U and have run into a money issue (go figure).
My question to the masses, can I put an adapter onto a 95 4.0 intake and run it? I would leave the injectors in their holes to keep them sealed and when I get a harness and ECM, convert it back to FI.
Could I put an adapter onto this intake with a carb, power the dizzy and drive it around the yard?

Well, what year 4.0? Does it still have a distributer? Tube if it does, the ECU controls it. If you have access to a 258 distributer, then a carb should work fine if you also have a manual Trans. The AW4 is also controlled by the ECU and uses several data points (such as throttle position) to tell the Trans when to shift.

You will need an electric fuel pump. (no spot for it on the block) AFAIK no-one makes an adapter but it's easy to do. I want to mod one of my intakes to take a 2bbl throttlebody and allow more air in for my stroker. The current plan is to use my LPG adapter and an HEI dist along with the computer and wiring to operate the AW4 in my '84 J10.

95 engine from a GC. I have the dizzy out of a 4.2 to use and the fuel pump was a given. ;)

Maybe if I start screwing around with the carb crap, an ECU and harness will fall into my lap...

Eventually, yes, but I want to move it around my yard, not down the street. It will have the factory EFI on it when before that. ;)
