An update. Scored a solid fender and hood from junkyard. Also got some other goodies for the future. :D Gonna start working on stripping the new parts down and take then to a local body shop to color match and shoot.

In other news, my pig nose is a fuel pig. BAD. filled it up, drove a 40 mile trip on the highway at 55mph. Topped it back off. 9 mpg. Wow. I was totally expecting better than 10, especially after the tune up. No amount of tuning is going to cure this engine's thirst. My truck (85 W350 Dodge) with a 360, and 4.56 gearing with 33s got 10-11 all day long. This pretty much solidifies my thoughts about a modernized driveline transplant.

Rear window is surrounded by fresh weatherstripping as is the tailgate. Window now functions correctly. Tailgate opens.

Anyone know how to clean this goo from the inner fender?

Drip rail trim kit from Wagoneer's West came today. Sweet stuff! Polished aluminum to replace the crappy, cracked plastic.

Installed the trim kit over the weekend and got most of the serhill Tailgate harness installed. Enough to reinstall back glass and put the glass up to keep elements out till I finish the under dash stuff.

Does that kit completely rewire the tailgate stuff? My tailgate is a disaster and I'll probably have to start from the battery back. Not sure what all his kit does so maybe you can offer some insight and opinion on how it works?

It rewires the power window function from battery to gate, where there is a circuit and relay panel.
You can have 3 options:
Remote only (power your liftgate window with a fob)
Key switch and dash switch (original style) Comes with new switches to replace the old ones
Original style AND remotes.

Here is a good write up: http://www.myjeepandme.com/fix-your-jee ... -tailgate/

I don't recommend drilling big holes in the tailgate to remove the lifter clips, however. Just get a long, needle nose plier tool.

Worked great for me.

Got the whole shebang working, nearly. Trying to use the stock dash switch, but was getting feedback to the circuitry. A Call to rick pointed me to this thread: (see reply #46) http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthre ... 645&page=3

Thanks for the kind words.

I have the serehill unit working flawlessly. The remote is awesome!

Cheapie electric fuel pump started acting up Saturday afternoon forcing us to use another vehicle for date night. Dang it! :banghead:
Side note, Old Shed's Peanut-butter Porter is awesome! :-bd

Sunday afternoon I went back old school and installed a new mechanical pump. :)
Tuesday, I discovered a new dieseling issue. :(
Today, I backed the idle off about 3/4 turn. Dieseling gone. :)

I also followed Redone's thread about setting timing correctly with a vacuum gauge. Will see if mileage can be improved even more. :fsj:

Another update:

Best mileage achieved with tuning I have done thus far is 13.25mpg. Noticing erratic idle differences between cold idle and warm idle. Also, the mechanical pump system suffers terribly from vapor lock above 80*. This may be the whole culprit.

I've ordered and received the correct sending unit for Waggys up till 85. Thank you BJ's!

Modded it like the tbi guys have done and installed an in-tank pump from a late 80s gasser F-series pickup.

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/car ... 7CL3*15378

This unit should work for my application since I'm still running a carb.

Verified the wiring coordination on the pump (didn't have any + or - markings) and have the assembly installed in the tank along with re-verifying it functions correctly.

Hope to pick up where I left off tomorrow and finish the install.

Again, I'd like to give BJ's props for carrying the correct sender for these rigs! Parts stores and Rockauto only have the 86-up style listed for all applications.

This causes two problems. If you have a pre-86 model, the sender reads the wrong way (resistance is flipped from full to empty), hence the gauge is always wrong.

Now, my gauge works!

Secondly, if you want to use the factory pickup and an in-tank pump, the 86-up unit's design prevents this because the sender mechanism is on the pickup tube right where it needs to be cut to install the pump.

The pre-86 Bj's carries has the sender on the bottom side of the top plate, not even attached to the tube.

220ish miles since doing this last mod. Aside from the $#!++y idle isses due to a worn throttle shaft, no other issues. Absolutely NO VAPOR LOCK!!!!

Filled up this AM. 13.4 mpg avg!!!

Been reading up on GM TBI stuff. It will be the next big task. No hurry.

Gotta tear into the coolant sending unit system. It is now inop for some reason. Been slowly registering cooler and cooler. Now nothing.
