1977 Golden Eagle

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

A year or two ago I came across a 1977 Golden Eagle J10 which I had a previous history with about 12 years ago. This truck has been well loved, used and abused over the years. Originally a 360/T15 a previous owner swapped in a 401 to haul gooseneck trailers with.

Image

I’ve been using this truck as an on again/off again daily driver and off-road toy without much maintenance. It’s finally time to fix it up.

Image

Somewhere along the way somebody had taken the grille guard and Golden Eagle wheels off. Looked cool without them but thru a weird stroke of luck (thank you Nikkormats!!) the original Golden Eagle wheels and grille guard turned up.

Image

While connecting the dots of the truck and the parts and where they’ve each been it was determined that these are the very same wheels and grille guard that it left the factory with.

One of the most nagging things about this truck as long as I have known it has been the poor operation of the heater. Living above 10oooFT in Colorado you need a very good heater and this truck would fog the windows after a very short time all while delivering sucky heat.

Culprit wound up being a leaky heater core and a heater box jam packed with leaves.

Image

While I was in there I also installed new heater duct hose under the dash. The old stuff was nonexistent.

So far, so good with the heat! Vacuum actuators are not hooked up and I’m planning on doing the Chevy blower motor upgrade. Once that’s done it should really get some air moving!

One of the other desperate things this truck has needed for quite some time has been a revamp of the electrical system. At the 2019 FSJ Ouray Invasion the ammeter burned up and was bypassed in the field. We chased electrical issues the rest of the trip including a sinking in the river and at least one legitimate fire after the invasion.

Image

Earlier this year there was another small electrical fire and further electrical gremlins were chased at Ouray 2020 much to the dismay of a couple of attendees....sorry guys :p

Image

The old wiring was cleaned up and anything that even looked suspicious was removed. The heavy red and yellow wires to the main firewall connector are now run to a fused power distribution block and the alternator has its own dedicated run to a separate block complete with a fuse. The alternator was also upgraded to a Ford 3G which puts out 130amps. The 1977 models use a Ford alternator so this was deemed to be the most logical swap without swapping the brackets out.

4/0000 double jacketed cable for the main leads and 6/ga double jacketed cable for the smaller leads. Battery is a group 65 and is slightly too big for this tray. Not finished with the wiring just yet.

Image

Speaking of new stuff and failures....the starter, solenoid and battery were also replaced (yay for warranties!) due to a battery explosion with the previous unit. With the oversized cables the engine cranks over at a ferocious pace now.

Short big wire takes a lot of patients to bend so that it looks good. It's even more fun if the wire is cold say down around zero degrees!

Haven’t had a chance to turn any wrenches on the Golden Eagle recently but dropped in on Fulsizejeep this weekend and picked up some long overdue parts.

Image

I HAVE TO get off my butt and install the new carb. Best MPG on this trip was a little over 10.

Glad to see the FSJ ranch still survives.
Glad to hear you made it home, now get that clutch put in I bet your mileage will improve without it slipping

Clutch and ball joints are definitely the upmost priority. At the rate the current clutch is acting I’m thinking it’s the next big thing that needs done. I’m kicking around the idea of an NV4500 swap to replace the T15. We’ll see.

Got some work done today. Figured out my carb was a bit leaky and that definitely explains the poor fuel mileage.

Image

Was pleasantly surprised to see a real lack of grime and crud inside the engine.
Image

Old intake and carb are officially ancient history. Holley 90-670TA and Edelbrock 2131 will be replacing these. I’m REALLY looking forward to a functional choke!

I'm not sure what is going on here with the bailing wire.

Made a boat load of progress today.

Finally installed the bumper and wired up the license plate lights.

Edelbrock 2131 and Holley 90670 are installed! Accidentally crossed the 4&8 plug wires and had popping thru the exhaust. Runs like a scalded dog now!

You never know when your going to find a Chevy on the side of the road in need of some bailing wire to help get it home
