Here is a closer view of the bottom to see some of my bends. It’s not completely perfect, but we’re not keeping this bed forever, it’s just until I can find a good bed.

Great job man.

I would say that's about as good of a patch as I've ever seen.

Keep up the good work!

Edit* Do you plan on cutting out the rusted metal of patching over top? I would suggest the latter for 2 reasons.
1) Gives you practice with butt welds (or lap weld if you get a flange making tool).
2) This bed might be worth something to another enthusiast at some point depending on how far gone it is. It would be nice to see it preserved for future J10 build.

Thanks for the kind words! So as of right now the plan is to cut out under it but leave about a 1 inch overlap underneath and we will use panel bonding adhesive to attach it. We would tack it at the corners and stuff but the majority of it would be panel bonded. Then after we have all of our patches on we will do some minor body work (basically hide where we attached it) and prime it from the body line down (either black or do a tinted primer).

If we do a two tone this would be what it looked like most likely. We would keep the current color on top and then do a primer black/grey on the bottom, or we were thinking like a dark green.

Interesting.

I've never used the adhesive body panels, but am curious to see how they turn out.
I might end up doing this on my truck to fix the rear fender flare if it holds well.
I guess my main concern was longevity, but some of these new adhesives are very strong.

If you keep the factory color, I would say black primer on the bottom.

The green would be cool, but it is a lot more work to do a color change (Door jambs, behind bed and cab, dash, inside cab, etc.)

My dad has restored old cars from home for about 18 years. Originally he wasn’t a fan of the panel bonding but he tried it out on a project car and thought it worked well. He is in the process of building a 1970 gto for a customer and glued the roof skin on (the car was rough!). He has used it on many vehicles and they have all held up so now he likes to use it. He doesn’t always use it, especially for structural things for obvious reasons but it works well for larger body panels. He says that some new car companies use it to glue on the roofs, etc instead of spot welds.

That is a good point about having to paint the door jambs, I hadn’t thought about that.

Got a lot more work done today. Made a patch for the behind the rear wheel well, and almost finished up a patch for the front on the other side. The one for behind the rear wheel was really fighting me, especially with the bumper so I couldn’t ever really completely hold it up to the truck very well. But it turned out ok in my opinion. It’s not 100% perfect but it’ll pass. Image

Here’s a pic of the front for the other side. It’s not really necessary but I messed up the rear the first time because I made it to match the front dimension wise but the wide black section is about an inch shorter from the front to the rear, so I decided, instead of scrapping this piece, just use it on the other side. This side needed a little work anyways.

And here’s a pic of where we plan on cutting. We will cut on the inside of the masking tape to leave a section to glue the piece too. However we will just completely remove the bottom black section because it’s just too far gone.

Well we made a lot of progress today. I cut out the old rusted metal, primed the back side of the new sheets, and ground the surfaces we were glueing to. Then we applied the adhesive to both the truck and the new pieces and stuck them on, and they are now currently curing/drying which they have to do overnight. They aren’t perfect but that wasn’t the intent so I’m pretty happy with it.

This is what it looked like after we cut out the patches and ground the edges of the areas. On the front it ended up being kind of a little teeny bit solid so we saved a little bit of it for a glueing surface to provide support. Man it was so frickin rusty under both sections though!

Did some sanding on the excess glue for my patches. I got it pretty much finished up I think, now it’s time to put some body filler on it and prime it. I’m happy with how it turned out. There’s a couple spots it doesn’t fit perfect but it will work.

And I measured and drilled out the holes for the side marker light and installed that. Now I have to decide what my plan is for the bed end-cap things. I can use the excess metal from my patches to repair them a little bit which is probably what I’ll do bit it still comes down to how much work I really want to put into a temporary bed.

Got the other piece glued on. Using a mix of clamps, straps, and wood to hold it where we want itImage. It’s a pretty good patch. We didn’t have to replace as much of the black part on the bottom so I cut off part of the lower section of patch. It only really needed to be replaced at the bodyline where jeep originally connected the bedside. We also needed to cover up the old fuel filler hole.

Well I submitted my first order to BJ’s Offroad. I ordered the complete weatherstripping kit for the J10 after we prime it. For the entire kit plus shipping it was $600.05. It’s expensive but I considered it a Christmas present to myself which made it okay. I will make a post once I get them. I have high hopes for them.

Lol. I think my first BJ's order (that I placed myself) was braided brake lines and poly bushings for the front end 😂
'71 Wagoneer (DD)
-B350 (HEI, iron 4-barrel, Edelbrock 1406), TH400, D20
-'74 D44 front (nonpower discs)
-custom headliner
-Front shoulder belts (rears eventually)

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Well I forgot to take pictures this afternoon but I got a little more done on my truck. I made a patch for the driver’s side behind the rear wheel (like what I have done with the other 3 places) and it’s just about ready to be put on. I just need to cut out the old crap and then prime the new piece and then it can be installed. I’m really happy with how this patch has turned out so far. It went the quickest and I feel like it fits the most accurate.
