Well the truck is getting some love again finally. Image
We started my jeep J5 build. While I was away on vacation at a wrestling camp, my brother and dad decided to surprise me by pulling it into the shop, pulling the k5 body off of it’s frame, then cleaned the frame and drive train. Then they pulled the orange truck and took the cab and front clip off, set it on the k5 frame and built body mounts and everything.

I also ordered a bunch of new brake parts so it will be ready to go move soon. I still need to do the floors in the orange truck because about 40% of the floor is missing and another 20% is about as thin as paper. Overall, it was a great surprise.

Here’s a pic of the floors. They’re bad but it’ll give me something to do, I’m gonna do all the fabbing for them instead of buying new ones even though it would be easier.

Bed is off of the frame. It is very rough so we are just gonna do trophy truck style bed sides. The bed floor and the braces/supports are really rusty beyond use which sucks because we would have preferred to use the bed floor and everything.

Got the orange truck frame cut up and ready for scrap (the middle part of the frame is in the front of the k5 tub).

Got the bed chopped up close to length and set on the truck. It’s looking really good and Im really happy with it so far. Some will need to come off the back but not a tone. Obviously there are no mounts yet but it looks good IMO. I would just like to note that the k5 frame had no lift, but it looks like the truck can easily clear 33’s. For the bed chop we already cut about 24.5” off of it and some more needs to come off to fit the front of the bed piece on it.

That one has been gone since before you were born lol. I’ve been at this game a long time 😂 I think that picture was in four wheeler magazine about 2001.

Have the floor patched and painted and have the seats mounted. Bed is also shortened all the way and the front of the bed is welded on. Bed mounts are done.

Need to figure out a fuel filler now. It will probably look similar to the one on my other truck when it had the fleetside bed on it.

Also gonna be getting either A: a new radiator for it (at the same time as my other truck) or B: getting a new radiator for my other truck and putting those hoses on this truck.

Made more progress. Over the weekend I installed new headlights along with an h4 wiring harness with relays to make the headlights brighter. Also ran my taillight wiring to the back and got my taillights/brake lights working. Then got my grille installed. Now it just needs a radiator and bumpers (and licensing) and I will be able to drive it. We are making bumper mounts for the original ramsey winch bumper so I can put it on the front. Don’t know what we’re gonna do for a rear bumper yet but we’ll figure it out.

Pic below is just a random pic of my beautiful work horse because I don’t have any pics of the progress.

Digging the truck build so far. But that lawn is also pretty incredible!

Remembered to take pictures yesterday. Not today of course after I did more work but hey new pics is new pics. Yes I put the busted up old grille back in even though I have a nearly perfect pignose that I could put in. But I figured hey it’s a beater truck so who cares.

Got a new starter put in today because the old one was going bad. For some reason when I crank it it is making a weird ticking noise, like the battery is dead while it’s cranking, but then it starts up.

Initially thought it was a bad ground, but checked the engine ground to the battery and that appeared good and cleaned up the ground on the engine side for good measure. Then double checked the starter and that everything was tight on there, and it was. Any thoughts? We’re thinking maybe the new starter is a little bit different with how far it bites into the flywheel or something. Not really sure.

Getting my fuel fill neck worked out. Not your typical hole in the bed side filler. My brother had an old ammo can he got from someone and I asked if I could have it and he said sure. The idea initially branched from an idea I saw on Facebook, where someone took a jerry can and put it in the bed of a truck (bolted it down) and ran a tube through the bed floor inside the jerry can to the gas tank. I thought. Dang thats cool. So here we are. The can is mounted to the bed side, not the floor in case you guys were worried. We built a patch panel for the floor we just didn’t want to take the ammo can out to put it in yet.

This is where I got the idea. Pretty cool imo.

Update on the starter: it is still being weird. Switched my negative battery cable thinking it might be that, it’s not. So while I’m at school my dad offered to just take my starter out and bench test it to see if it’s just no good. Hopefully that’s the case and I can just return it and get a new one.

More updates! First and most noticeable. Bumpers are on (ish). They aren’t tight yet but mocking them up is going good.
Image
Other noticeable thing from the pic: I switched the tires from my other truck and MAN does this thing look sweet now. The other truck looks dumb as f*** with the little tires again but oh wellImage.

T case shifter is installed. Had to cut up the trans tunnel cover piece and flatten it out to make the shifter sit correct but it cleaned up the look of the floor a lot too so it’s a win win.
